Berlin Leipzig Advice

Hello All. Just wondering if anyone has any good advice for a day trip from Berlin to Leipzig? Me and my boyfriend will be travelling. I have a fip card and coupons but may not use them for this trip .the ice trains can be pretty pricy, just wondering if there are any regio trains anyone used before etc? Thanks!

At a glance you can catch Regional Express/S Bahn services from Berlin Hbf to Leipzig Hbf in around three hours.

An example is catching the 09:15 RE3709 bound for Dessau Hbf and having a 19 minute connection at Rosslau (Elbe) for a slower RegionalBahn RB16479 bound for Leipzig-Stoetteritz as far as Leipzig Hbf, arriving at 12:13.

Seems you can also change at Lutherstadt-Wittenberg and travel that way with a broadly similar journey time.

The standard ICE service direct to Leipzig takes around 1hr 15 mins.

The ICE is quite cheap if booked ahead. For next week there are several Advance tickets at around €20 each.

Sorry poor internet so from memory. A
Quer-Durchs-Land day ticket for 2 on Regional trains after 0900 will set you back EUR56 from memory, if you are prepared to spend the extra time on board and/or want flexibility. There is also the Regio120 ticket for EUR 20 each single, but the sensible solution is to book Sparpreis advance tickets as already suggested.

If you go to DB's booking site at https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml
you can select the "local transport only" option to remove ICE and IC services from what's being offered.
Looks like a frequent enough service (around 2 an hour), taking around the 3-hour mark, with one change.

IF you wanted to leave earlier-to have more time there, and IF not afraid/averse to buses, look at FLIXbus-singles from 9 eur if booked advance and leaves from various points in Berlin. On weekdays all QdL or other cheap tickets for R-trains are not valid before 9.00.
As the route covers 2 ''Länder'' for near equal distance, there is no really advantageous point of breaking up.
Other tip: if decided to advance ICE, you can get an additional dayticket for Leipzig (tram,bus, also all local trains i the city) for a little less as bought over there. Very nice new S-bahn tunnel from low level HBF under centre to the south of town.

When you go through the tunnel, get off at Bayrischer Bahnhof and visit the Bayrischer Bahnhof Gasthaus & Gosebrauerei. When you visit the Thomaskirche, pop in to Brauhaus an der Thomaskirche. There may be a theme, there.

Leipzig Markt station is spectacular - provided you don't suffer from vertigo.

If you go an a Saturday I recommend the Motete at 3.00pm in St Thomas Church. St Nicholas Church is where the peaceful revolution started which led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. At Bayrischer Bahnhof there are some interesting bit of the architeture of the original station. At Hauptbahnhof on the high numbered platforms usually a display of historic locos.

Just a point of historical interest. Leipzig Hautbahnhof, although it has a single coordinated front facade, behind that there used to be two separate stations. one for the Prussian Railways and one for the Saxony Railways. So there are two separate booking halls and two separate restaurants (although one of the restaurants is now a shop) Both well worth looking act for architectural interest. Buy day tickets for the trams on line before you go would be my advice for getting around although the whole of the city centre is walkable,

If you're interested to learn something of what it was like to live in the DDR, Museum in Stasi-Bunker is worth a visit. Almost all info is in German but you can get an audio guide in English if German is not your strong point.

I thought the refurbished Leipzig Hbf was an excellent job when I paused there for an hour recently.
A good selection of shops on three levels with many regional products, almost a farmer's market in our terms.
Plus the ubiquitous Thuringian sausage stands.
Something rather better than our average regional main station retail offering.
Nicer also than Berlin Hbf which has all the facilities but no "soul".

Try visiting Leipzig Hbf in the evening when it is dark - looks fantastic.
