Agreed - the best counties are west - the worst are east LOL

How did you find out about the 0706?

And btw, I pushed for a Bedwyn stop on the 0706, but it just was impossible :'(

I didn't think Ashchurch had a link to Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth, I just got the names mixed up! Then I readised Ashchurch actually does have a direct link to Weymouth!

Just don't take the map as gospel, that's got an error on it. Middlesex, it does not exist; Anyway let's get back on track. (Excuse the pun)

It used to - I think the map is old; there's no counties like N. Somerset and S. Glos, but there's one like Huntingdonshire, which I have never heard of!

Don't forget, in 10 years time (i think - i can't remember exactly when) We will have electric trains to Newbury. It's fairly obvious to me what the patterns will be like then, as i've posted before.

Padd - NBY: Slough, Maidenhead, Reading then all stations to NBY (electric)
Padd - Exeter/Frome/Somewhere: Semi fast to NBY then all stations (turbos)
Padd - Westcountry: Reading, wherever the turbo's end, then on as now. (hst)

I think we should stop there just in case we cause another civil war!

It's not what you know that is important, it's WHO you know. ;)

If we have a civil war every time i mention bedwyn then Ill mention it more often for the high entertainment value!

And I know exactly the right people to take it up with! No need to worry about who I know!!

Some good thoughts there, sounds realistic!

On the Bedwyn subject, I think the main problem there is the bizarre fact that you can't get to Pewsey without going via Hungerford or Newbury. It's not the only case (try going to Chathill and asking for a return to Berwick) but they are only nine miles apart.

Assuming they electrify to Newbury, you could run an hourly Reading-Exeter stopper as a collector, but that would not actually go to London. As a result, Kintbury, Hungerford and Bedwyn would lose their London service. It might end up incorporating the Reading-Basingstoke service, unless there were diagramming problems.
Basingstoke-Bramely-Mortimer-Reading West-Reading General-Theale-Midgeham-Newbury-Kintbury-Hungerford-Bedwyn-Perswy-Westbury-Frome-Bruton-Castle Cary-Somerton (ideally)-Langport (ideally)-Taunton-Wellington (ideally)-Tiverton Parkway-Cullompton (ideally)-Exeter St David's
This would be a very long, slow run, and might require a few waits in loops to allow expresses to pass. It's also possible to split it at Westbury, maybe with the eastern portion diverting to Warminster and the western portion to Swindon via Melksham. The reopenings are probably impossible, but this is the land of wishful thinking :?

However, it's been a while since I went to school (near Frome) so I don't know if things have changed much. Maybe the idea of a slow train cantering along the B&H is just plain fantasy, especially as I know the signal headways are a bit long down there.

Personally I think all London - Penzances should run non-stop to Exeter, and London - Plymouths non-stop to Taunton (from Reading). Extend a few DMU services from Bedwyn to Exeter if connections need to be maintained.

BTW, It's Ashurst (Hants)[Pedant mode off]

Technically Ashurst (New Forest), although the actual village is of course in Hampshire, it makes it sound nicer.

We have about 20 services westbound, but going to Bournemouth or Poole you have to change at Brockenhurst to avoid a 25 minute wait.

Rather assumes that the majority of the traffic is from London to the West Country but my experience over 18 years of travelling down to Plymouth is that this is not the case.
During the school holidays the Penzance trains are wedged and it is often difficult to get a seat joining at Plymouth, outside the holidays the London beyond Plymouth market could be comfortably accommodated on a 2 car 158. Plymouth starters are not heavily loaded either until they reach Exeter it is not uncommon to have a carriage to yourself on the lunchtime from Plymouth trains

...or try going from Dunbar to Drem. The ECML has a few of these, which is why I'm surprised at the Great Western obsession

Yes it's very bizarre, which is partially why I fight for change!

I am all aware of the Chathill situaution, and have tried to think of possible solutions. However Chathill is quite insignificant even when compared to Bedwyn!

If you could turn back at Berwick, that would solve the issue.

You *can* turn back at Berwick (the one a day Chathill service used to run to/from Berwick in BR days), but Northern chose not to serve it

As I've said, plenty other places where there is no service to the next station - Bedwyn isn't unique
