Nice set of photos. lt looks like you can get up to the edge of the viaduct but not officially go over it - is that right?

From my brief time at the site all there was stopping you access the viaduct was a sign stuck in the ground saying Private Property, Keep Out. There is no fences anywhere stopping you climbing up to the bridge level, and looking at the pathways running around the site I would guess it has been pretty much free access for a very long time.

Now I was only there for photographic reasons and wouldn't dream of trying to cross any further across the bridge than the solid concrete base of the first section as shown in the photos, but I have no doubt there has been many a youngster try and cross the bridge. I am no one for heights anyway so I grabbed the few photos I wanted and headed back to more solid ground. I have heard stories of people who have died falling from the bridge, but then again we don't know what they were doing up there in the first place, drunk, graffiti etc, who knows.

All I can say is it is a stunning location and I fully intend to visit again, but won't be making the climb up to the bridge level again.

Thanks for the info. Must be time for another visit, as last time I was there was about 1983! Not so many trains then, and no advance info on freight, but I did photograph the Spondon acid tanks, which smelled like vinegar as they went past.
