Another London bendy Bus has gone up in flames. This morning a Mercedes Citaro Bendy bus operated by Arriva London North operating on route 73 at Terminus Place Victoria. The only person on board the driver escaped without injury. Looking at the pictures of the bus and the fact that TfL are gradually fazing them out means this vehicle BX55FVZ (MA122) has already reached its own terminus.

That's nicer than the Arriva buses we have around here. Much better ventilation for a start. :)

Looks like the back of the bus was where the fire started and is that Transport for London's Bus Garage where Daniel took the pictures

I don't know why Bendy Fires seem to attract the attention they do, 5 fires in 8 years over a fleet of several hundred intensively used vehicles, seems about average.

Haven't Arriva High Wycombe had about 3 burnouts this year? (not Citaros either)

Yes, and I'm surprised that they haven't got the same amount of attention! Perhaps it's because bendy buses are "strange" or "scary" things to reporters and so the story will make the readers more shocked! :P

Bendy Buses are great, but not in London. I can understand how much they're hated in the city, but hope they'll be cascaded to other areas where they'll be invaluable.

As for how the media reports things, well we all know how the media goes with the flow most of the time.

I'm sure that this was a suspected arson. I haven't looked up the incident to confirm though!

Vehicle Recall: MERCEDES BENZ BUS Citaro (Jan 2010)
Fire may occur
MERCEDES BENZ BUS announced a problem with the Citaro affecting a total of 153 vehicles.

It has been identified that, the grid heaters fitted to vehicles with EEV emission standard may suffer malfunctions or failures, irrespective of the vehicles being in motion or parked. Unless addressed, there is a risk of current leakage in the control head of the grid heater which could result in a short circuit. Should this occur, the casting compound could melt and create a smouldering fire.

MERCEDES BENZ BUS intend to as a temporary measure, the grid heater will be deactivated.

If you think that your vehicle may be affected by this recall you should contact your nearest MERCEDES BENZ BUS dealer who will be able to confirm whether or not your car is safe and arrange its repair if necessary.
