On 28 march 2022, electric trains started running on the 12,5 km, single track, freight-only line between Bilzen and Genk-Goederen. This means that electric trains to (and from) the east can use a shorter route by avoiding the very busy station at Hasselt. The line was completely modernized, including new signalling and the introduction of ETCS. A new bridge was constructed to cross the Antwerp - Liège canal. This bridge is now 2 m higher than the old bridge to allow larger ships to pass.

Now that this electrification is complete, we now have an avoiding line for through traffic between Antwerp and Germany. So modernization work on the station Hasselt can take place on a larger scale. No time was lost : this week, the station is cut from almost all traffic while the station throat on the Antwerp side is being completely rebuilt. Traffic will be back next week but the works will take several more months.
