I am thinking about a trip on the Eurostar to Brussels sometime later this year.

Last time I was in the area was in 1992 on a sleeper heading for Vienna so I didn't see much.

I am probably travelling with the wife and daughter so not a lot of chance for dedicated 'spotting' apart from travelling there and back and maybe a bit of time on the Eurostar platforms. So can anyone advise if there is a fair amount to see en route in France/Belgium?

What is 'spotting' like at Brussels Eurostar platforms> Can you see other SNCB locos/units? from there?

Thanks in advance.

If arriving/departing on the Eurostar there is no time to dawdle on the platform. Boarding is usuaully 15 mins prior to departure. Sit on the left and you can see the main platforms through the mesh fence, though there's often a Thalys parked in the way.

They will chase you off the platform in short order after disembarking. The main platforms have a good view, though it's not the best area to hang around with a family.

En route you're doing about 190mph so spotting is limited. In Lille you'll pass the sidings outside the station with a decent amount in, and there's a small freight yard with a few bits and bobs in. Else the rest is just passing fields. Forest depot is on the left as you arrive in Brussels. Freight avoids the city.

Thanks. Exactly what I need. Sounds like the left is the side to sit on then. I'll see if i can book that side.

I guess Brussels isn't the best station then?
I've always felt safe in Salzburg, Vienna (last trip was back in 2010 and lot has changed in Europe now).

If the train is quiet you can usually reaccommodate yourself with ease. Windows in the 373s are big, no idea about the new ones, each time I've been booked on one its been switched!

Brussels stations have a bit of a grubby reputation. Keep your wits about you and watch for distraction techniques. The trains to Amsterdam are absolutely rife with thieves.

Many stations in Europe, and indeed Belgium are safe. I've never felt at home on any of the Brussels stations.
