I've a couple of questions! Is it far from where Stena docks in L'pool to Lime St. Station and I assume a cabin isn't available on an FIP?

Yes it is quite a long way to Lime Street; they dock in Birkenhead! It's about a mile to Hamilton Square station though. Is FIP usable? My father can't use this service on his privs: he can only use services that were operated by Sealink at the time it was privatised (or their successor services in the case of Cairnryan > Belfast being the equivalent of Stranraer > Larne). If FIP is usable you will be able to get a cabin by paying the ordinary cabin supplement.

In fact I can see the ferries docked at Birkenhead, from my desk at work down on the banks of the lovely River Mersey.

You can easily get a taxi to lime street (or elsewhere), about £15. Early start though, my ferry arrived early docking around 5.30am. The ferry across the Mersey could be fun!
