I recommend riding all of the subway lines and some of the Green line. I highly recommend checking out the trolleybuses in Cambridge at Harvard station on the Red line.

Had a trip out to Jamaica Plain and one or two other place on the "T" and took the Downeaster from Boston North station, north, to Portland Maine (nicely doable in a day):
