I used to go there years ago, it was a reet flea pit along with The Station Hotel! If its owned by the folk who own The Head of Steam then it might be worth a look...hopefully there will be a canny collection of ales and foreign stuff!

It was taken over and renovated a year or so ago. Like some of the other Head of Steam places, it's got quite a few bit of railway memorabilia etc.

The pub next to the line at Barnetby is really good. Well, it used to be about 25 years ago ... dunno if it's still there now (I was only eleven). I remember going there spotting with the old man when I was a kid.

Shed loads of freight trains at all hours of the day.

The garden at the Tickled Trout in Wye is rather nice to watch the trains go by on a summers day.

Also, a shout out to the Barnes Wallace in Howden. The trains aren't so easy to see because of the vegetation, but I always enjoy listening to the level crossing sirens and the trains speeding by. Also it's a lovely pub with nice ale.

I used to enjoy picnics in Sydney Gardens, Bath, but I believe they fenced it off

Not a beer garden as such but the pub on the station at Stalybridge seems to use the platform as one!

Sadly we have been evicted off the platform into the car park, I suspect more because of people smoking on the platform rather than drinking :(

^ but too be fair you can watch the trains from the car park or from inside the pub. Sadly I think its the 'rail ale trail' yobs that have spoilt it for everyone and who incidently don't drink ale!

Beer garden of The station Inn at Ribblehead :) Best Beer garden by far on a nice day.

Agreed that it's a fantastic location and its a lovely pub too with great beers. However, due to it's exposed position nice days are few and far between!

Are there benches in the car park i.e. somewhere to sit down?

I just remembered the name and was coming to edit :D

Beat you to it! ;)

I've walked down the cinder track that starts near The Fountain with my Grandparents a few times. We've walked to East Markham before. The problem is it's been overgrown in recent years so it's been hard to get down. Hopefully it won't be too bad this year!

For people who don't know the area, the cinder track (that's what my Grandparents call it anyway) is a path that runs by the ECML between Tuxford and East Markham. It's is right next to the line at one point, with just a small fence between the track and the path, so is good for spotting and photography.

Have to agree there. The Pennines route is a brilliant real ale pub crawl that has been spoiled by idiot drinkers out to get as plastered as possible in the shortest period of time.

The metal bridge, in err... Metal Bridge! Actually it has a different name now and I can't remember it off the top of my head. It's just off the A688 2 miles eat of Spennymoor, a mile or so to the north of Ferryhill and backs onto tursdale junction on the ECML. It also has a miniature railway in the beer garden.

Real Ale drinkers are just as bad as Lager drinkers, its the person that makes the idiot and not the drink <(

They need to get rid of that advertising board in front of the car park for the enthusiasts, me I like to see all the memorabilia inside, now to me thats fascinating!

An old favourite of mine was the Victory Inn between Taunton and Wellington in Somerset. A good selection of real ales, decent food, and you get advance warning of approaching trains thanks to the adjacent AHB level crossing (which is named after said pub).

Now called the Allerford Inn. Level crossing has retained the 'Victory LC' name I believe.

The Clachnaharry Inn, just north of Inverness has fine ales and fine views from a terrace overlooking the line and The Caledonian Canal sea lock

Newcastle - the CenturiOn, only see trains if you sit outside and you are not blocked by a nasty 142/can see through the gap next to the Ticket office
From the Bridge Hotel you can easily see the ECML, front windows, but you CANNOT see the trains on the High Level - well you can see the tops of their sides as you are looking straight up at it! Still all you miss is some hideous 142s
Missing from the list:
Sheffield Tap, Platform 1 Sheffield Station
Post Yard, Kings Cross
Betjeman Arms, St Pancras - Eurostars only in exterior bar

On the Heart Of Wales there's a beautiful garden at the Cammarch Hotel alongside Llangamarch Wells station and you can also sit outside the Cambrian at Builth Rd which was once the old Builth Rd Low Level station building. Trouble is there's just not many trains going past!

The South Western Arms in St Denys is right next to the station, has a large beer garden adjacent to platform 4 and serves quite an extensive range of real ales.

Alas, the foliage means that you can just about see the tops of the trains that go by.

There is also the 'Snowdonia Park' in Waunfawr on the Welsh Highland Railway. Great pub, it has a small brewery attached and from the garden you can see.....
