G'day,

Having travelled up to Manchester this morning it's certainly not beer garden weather! However I would love to hear peoples suggestions for when the weather is better. To kick things off my vote goes to the Victoria Hotel in Beeston.

Many thanks,

Richmond Commuter!

The Ship in at Reedham (Nolfolk) as you can watch Lowestoft trains go over the swing bridge.
The Bowyer's Arms at Radley backs on to Radley station.

The Magnet on Wellington Road in Stockport has a fair view of trains on the viaduct.

I bore my mates to death with details of the trains, but as it's also under the flightpath into Manchester Airport, a friend who is a pilot competes for attention with the details of the planes overhead :)

At a pinch -- and I accept it's not perfect -- the Continental in Preston has a very close view of the WCML ;)

The Cutter Inn in Ely, by the riverside. It has a good view of the line just north of Ely station- though it is close enough that you'll hear the sirens on the level crossing (somewhat annoying). If you're a fan of 170s and 158s you'll see lots- though there's a fair bit of freight, especially if the North London Line is closed for engineering works

Double Locks or The Turf near Exeter :) Not right next to the line, but both have good unobstructed views

Double Locks is about a 40 min walk from the city centre along the Canal Paths. Turf is only accessible on foot or by boat (there is a car park about half a mile away)

Urmston (Liverpool - Manchester via Warrington) has a "beer garden" or fenced off seating area actually on the Liverpool bound platform - however the frequency and variety of rolling stock on offer makes you want to sit inside.

Beside the South Devon main line The Marine Tavern at Dawlish & The Boathouse further along at the Warren are pretty good.

Actually it may be The Telegraph.

The Tandem in Kennington (between Radley & Oxford) gives good views of the line.

An old favourite of mine was the Victory Inn between Taunton and Wellington in Somerset. A good selection of real ales, decent food, and you get advance warning of approaching trains thanks to the adjacent AHB level crossing (which is named after said pub).

Coombe Cellars between Shaldon and Newton Abbott. Gives a great view of a few miles of line from across the estuary.

The tower bar in Lincoln is right next to the level crossing. And has an outside area you can see the railway from. (It also has a glass wall facing the railway you can see through from inside. :D

Outside seating area of The Bell Inn, Sandy, has a view of the ECML. Not an unrestricted view though.

The Rushcutters in Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich is good to watch Yarmouth/Lowestoft/Sheringham trains cross the river. Again passing trains are announced by the warbler on Girlings Min R/G xing.

The Central in Gateshead has a roof terrace overlooking the line coming from the High Level Bridge and heading off towards Sunderland. Not the busiest bit of track but still interesting and as it's owned by the Head of Steam its also got a lot of decent beer.

I used to go there years ago, it was a reet flea pit along with The Station Hotel! If its owned by the folk who own The Head of Steam then it might be worth a look...hopefully there will be a canny collection of ales and foreign stuff!

Yr Hen Orsaf (Wetherspoons) in Aberystwyth actually on now closed part of station concourse and housed in former Cambrian Railway Offices. You would think that you are actually on the platform in the beer garden and there is a gate leading through but I don't think it is always unlocked.
The trouble is that you only see a train every two hours - terminates and returns after a few minutes.

Good ones mentioned in Newcastle already - the Telegraph looks over the east end of the station, The Bridge looks up onto the High Level bridge, and across the river The Central is right next to the Durham Coast line.

Few on the Tyne Valley line include the Boathouse at Wylam and the Adam and Eve at Prudhoe. Probably quite a few I've forgotten about.

Not a mainline, but the Black Lion Inn near Consall has a great view of the Churnet Valley Railway.

Not a beer garden as such but the pub on the station at Stalybridge seems to use the platform as one!

At least, I have seen it once when passing on a non-stop TPE heading home a couple of years ago, one rather mild Friday evening...all the workers sat out on the platform enjoying a post-work drink or two. Have to say I thought at the time it isn't something you'd see everywhere (plus the beer may get a rather pleasant(!) taste of unburnt diesel in it too :P)

I think I know the one you mean, and when I was there with a friend a couple of summers ago, he also mentioned it. Just got a small bridge thing to cross from Consall station itself, IIRC
