Beer Gardens Overlooking Railway Lines

Inspired by the fantastic weather this weekend which pub/hotel beer gardens can you relax in with a decent pint and watch the trains go past?

There's a pub in Saltash, forget the name now. Great view overlooking the line.

Not heavy rail admittedly, but you can see trams passing from The Rawson Spring in Hillsbrough.

Can you? It is of course right next to the tramway but I didn't think there was anywhere you could get a good view of them

If we're including preserved lines there's The Black Lion at Consall Forge on the Churnet Valley Railway.

There's a pub in Saltash, forget the name now. Great view overlooking the line.

The 'Two Bridges' in Saltash - looks as if it has closed unfortunately - not showing on Google Maps.

The 'Victoria Tap' at Manchester (yes) Victoria has a small area at the rear with a plastic 'lawn' where you can observe Metrolink trams at close quarters.

The George at Finchdean in Hampshire....between Petersfield and Rowlands Castle.

The Beer Engine at Newton St Cyres on the Barnstaple and Okehampton lines.

The Fox & Goose at Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire (only in Winter when there are no leaves on the trees).

The Shoulder of Mutton at Mytholmroyd in West Yorkshire.

The Station Inn at Ribblehead in North Yorkshire.

The Anchor Inn at Cockwood Harbour. Maybe not a garden as such but there is the seating area at the front giving a fine vantage point for watching the trains, and, if it floats your boat, boats!

The Station Inn at Ribblehead has views of the viaduct if you get the right spot.

The Tickled Trout in Wye has a good pub garden. Not been in it since the 90's, so no idea what the beer's like.

Good old Wetherspoons at Rainham (Kent) has a small patio from which you can gaze across the car park to see a few 375s and Javelins through the fence. Not the most picturesque setting but it sort of counts, probably.

The Old Bridge Inn at Kirkstall, Leeds has a beer garden that looks across the river to the Leeds-Shipley/Ilkley line.

And the outdoor seating at The Palace in The Calls, Leeds city centre looks across to the viaduct approaching Leeds station from the east.

Habrough has The Station, whose beer garden overlooks the station and level crossing.

The Cutter Inn on the riverside at Ely (Cambs) has a raised front terrace facing the railway on an embankment across the river - a grandstand view of the action!

Mount Pleasant at Dawlish Warren, not a beer garden but enjoyed several meals watching the trains go by

The Dundas Arms, Kintbury, offers views of GWR/freight trains and canal boats, especially if you manage to grab one of the garden booths.

Years ago I seem to remember meeting some friends at a nice old canalside pub at Limpley Stoke in the Avon Valley, which also had a good view of the railway from the beer garden. I wonder if it's still there?

The Trevor Arms is next to Glynde, but sadly the trees and plants grew a bit too much during it's eight year closure to really see the trains now.

Not so much a garden but The Magnet in Stockport has a roof terrace with a view of the railway.

The York tap is on the platform at York, it has several tables outside the pub that look out at the train movements

The Crystal Palace at Berkhamsted has a pleasant outdoor drinking area where you can see Pendolinos speeding pass at full tilt.

Looking at Mapy.cz , that pub would appear to be the Hop Pole....but it's on the other side of the road from the railway - which is at a lower level - and there's a car park in-between. Maybe my memory is failing me.

Ludlow Brewery: situated in the former goods shed adjacent to Ludlow station, with a fine terraced viewing area overlooking the station. A great place to enjoy beers brewed on the premises, and watch 67s on TfW services.

The White Hart at Barnes Bridge - more of a patio than a beer garden but a perfect view of trains crossing the river

Double Locks in Exeter - about a 10 or 15 walk from Marsh Barton and an outstanding beer garden with views across the canal to trains whizzing past on Exminster Marshes

In no particular order, four immediately spring to mind here:

• The Falcon in Clapham -- many moons ago I remember having a pint in there with some chums and seeing the Eurostar rumbling past above!
• The Fishery Inn in Hemel Hempstead (or the Beefeater across the road but that's a bit of a hole) for all your WCML needs.
• Railway Arms in West Drayton.
• The Victoria in Beeston.

Clachnaharry Inn on the western edge of Inverness alongside the Far North/Kyle of Lochalsh line. The pub is in the 2026 Good Beer Guide.
The former station footbridge is also next to the pub with great views from it across the water of the Beauly Firth to the Black Isle.

Buses -approximately hourly Monday to Saturday, less on Sundays- out to Clachnaharry from the city centre with a bus stop outside the pub.
