I was in Smiths recently and saw they have updated and republished this fairly thick magazine (bookazine?) as: Beeching: 60 years since the Axeman and I would thoroughly recommend it as I have got the original 50 one, it is fascinating and well researched and shows that for example if the roads and early vehicles had been better then we might not have had railways at all or at least a lot less of them, it also shows that the railways have always had issues and successive governments particularly when the railways were nationalised just made things worse for them also that 'maybe" Beeching does not deserve quite so much off the flack he gets as by the time he arrived on the scene he was more the equivalent of the builder who you call in after you have had the cowboys in and says: it is a total bodge and and the whole lot needs to come down and you need to start again.
In the updated issue it also talks about the cancellation of HS2 and goes in depth about the re-opening of the Okehampton and the Northumberland lines as I say it is well worth the money.
