I had a ride out on the 360 one morning in February from Wigan to Newton ( to get eventualiy to Earlestown) it was busy between Platt Bridge and Newton. I hope this isnt the first move towards the dreaded split of the service 360 when the franchising rolls out in St. Helens.
They need to make it so routes like this are jointly run by both authorities. I don't know the area beyond recognising the station names, but on a map looks like a reasonably built up area where despite railways existing, the bus is far easier to get around. This route looks like a key link in an otherwise awkward area.

I use the 22 on a regular basis. It crosses the boundary a few times and if they keep this, then there's no reason not to keep the 360. But who knows?

The 360 MAY be kept but however it is not under the Liverpool City Region 'Metro' franchise so no one has any idea who would operate the route. I doubt that Bee Network will take on the route as they currently do not have any public services that enter or serve Merseyside at all except for school services. Link Network and Warrington's Own Buses seem to be the obvious choices same with the 329.

Warringtons Own is most likely. They can boost their presence then on the Warrington to Newton Le Willows corridor. They've wanted to get Arriva out of Warrington for years but sadly for them they have never managed as passengers saw Arriva as the better and more reliable operator over WOB, so passengers kept voting with their feet.

It would be ironic if Warringtons own do get 329 as Warrington Borough used to operate the route many years ago.

The Arriva 360 used to be every 30 mins pre-covid but I believe a lack of drivers at St. Helens meant it became every 40 mins then cut again to the present hourly service. Abram is quite a large place and when I drive down there are always lots of people waiting for the 360. Just a pity it doesn't run through to Wigan, the plan being that you need to use a hopper ticket and then get a 609 in Platt Bridge.
When at arriva we had the 585 Wigan to Leigh via Abram and Golborne this route was extremely busy, the 660 run hourly to Warrington xx06 and the an Abram shout at xx36.

585 was one of the routes left over from the Northwestern WiganBus operation that used to operate out of Haydock Depot.

Did the 629 run yesterday? I can't find any vehicle tracking history on bustimes.org
Also being exactly 30 minutes behind the 360, why can't it just go all the way to Wigan instead of having a 30m dwell in Platt Bridge?

It means only one bus is required. It is a cheap way of doubling the frequency.
But that exact same 30 minutes is enough for a single 360 vehicle to go to Wigan and back (and has a 5 minute layover)

Are there stricter timetabling rules for Bee Network services?
Do drivers have to travel in a Taxi/on a 609 from the depot/Wigan bus station when changing over?

That would be cutting it very fine for the 629 as there is only 4 minutes turnaround at the other end.
Maybe even less then that once you consider the time it takes to go around the roundabout at the South end
But at 13 mins end to end (Weekdays) the bus spends more time stationary at the terminus than moving!

You don't quite need to go all the way down to the roundabout, you can turn around on the Queen Anne Pub.

Or do a loop in Golborne to head south via Derby Road and Nook Lane and then head back into Ashton via High Street. You do miss out part of Golborne but you also serve Derby Road which has basically no service.

Would there be much in the way of inconvenience to passengers who currently already travel in those parts of Golborne that you suggest are replaced by services in Derby Road?

The first suggestion affects only a single stop pair, and these stops are within 100 metres of an alternative stop

For the suggestion of running via Derby road, 3 stop pairs would be affected (though they still have access to the 360 and of course never had access to the 629 until recently). Of which, 1 of the bus stop pairs would be within 150m of the Tanners Lane bus stop. It would benefit the decent sizes Derby Road area though and provide more than 1 southbound bus per day that is currently provided. It also gives the 629 a USP rather than just duplicating over Arrivas service.

The 360 is one of those awkward cross boundary routes, operated by Arriva St Helens depot, it does go into Liverpool City Region, but only very briefly when it goes through Newton Le Willows, but most of the route is in GM though.

I can see the 360 maybe split at Newton Le Willows, with Bee Network operating Wigan to Newton Le Willows section, & maybe Warrington increasing the 22 frequency to 2 buses an hour for the Newton Le Willows to Warrington section.

It would also mean it needs a single deck vehicle if it's routed under the Tanners Lane bridge. Noticed a decker on it today and if it's a between school duties run it might have to be double deck for the school service/capacity reasons.

The issue isn't the boundary.

Bee Network depots can't run non-Bee Network franchised services. If Liverpool put the same condition in (as they probably will do) then there are a few routes which would be affected as they're currently operated out of St Helens depot. There are a few in and around Skelmersdale too which are currently operated by a depot which will become franchised, but operating outside of the franchising area.

The stuff in the northern half of the affected area may well get picked up by Preston Bus, who already operate some tenders around Skelmersdale. I'd expect the stuff in the southern half which is focused on Warrington will end up with Warrington's Own Buses, in the same way they run the CAT5. I'd be surprised if the 360 is split at Newton.

I can't see that the Bee Network will take on the 360 to Newton-le-Willows since they already have the 629 going all the way to the East Lancashire Road roundabout south of Golborne. In fact Bee Network currently do not have any services that serve any area in the Liverpool City Region despite the fact the only counties they serve are bits of Lancashire, Cheshire, West Yorkshire, and Derbyshire.

Bee Network took on all services run by the depots they took over. It may be LCR do the same regardless of their route. Maybe only a temporary measure but who knows

That is merely because the routes which run cross border with Merseyside, simply aren't operated by depots which Bee Network took over, nor were they TFGM tenders.

The 629 literally exists so TFGM/Andy Burnham can play politics. They can claim more areas are being served by the Bee Network and more people are 'benefitting' from the network and claim they are improving services. It's completely evident though from anyone with a brain that it's not there because it's going to be useful. It certainly shouldn't be being used as a sign for the future of the 360. Especially, for all of the faults of the Bee Network, they don't seem to have started to enforce county borders in most cases (the only exception seeming to be between Warrington and Altrincham). Even when the 360 was tendered by TFGM, the evening and Sunday trips ran between Wigan and Newton Le Willows, I can see this becoming a thing again and then cut the 22A service.

LCR are not looking to take on the 360. They have already released information on that (see relevant thread https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/liverpool-city-region-bus-franchising.282426/)

Yes the issue is that Liverpool City Region are planning to take a much firmer line on cross-boundary services than Greater Manchester did, including cutting the high frequency and profitable commercial routes from Chester and Preston to Liverpool.

I don't see what would happen to the 360, or likewise to the 375/385 to Southport from Wigan. Once St Helens depot is franchised, the current operations will cease (since whoever takes it on will not be able to run it and won't be being paid to run it either).

Arriva could in theory apply for service permits to both Merseytravel and Greater Manchester and (if granted, which in the Liverpool region is not a foregone conclusion) continue to run those routes commercially, but from which depot, using which buses and which drivers? Warrington's Own Buses could take on the 360 (and would probably get a more positive reception being a municipal), but would they? And it's one thing for Rotala / Preston Bus to run Lancashire County Council tenders in the Ormskirk and Skelmersdale area, but another thing entirely to run an intensive service 22 miles end to end with a 20 minute frequency and approx 2 hour end to end run with no stabling facility en route so far out of their area.

The thing is this has been mentioned in consultation responses I have seen including CPT submissions to the Liverpool authorities, but they seemingly don't care on the basis "not our problem".

Yesterday, I was on the 132 Wigan bus station to the Trafford Centre bus and about 16:00, we were passing through Boothstown when a number of V1 and V2 Guided Busway services passed us in the opposite direction. That area is way off their route, so can anyone say why that might have happened.

Looking at bustimes.org, no V1 or V2 went off-route yesterday.
However 132s have been diverting for at least the last 2 weeks into Ellenbrook due to a bit of Mosley Common Road (A577) being closed, meaning the 132 diverted meet to the V1/V2's route. Normally the 132 doesn't go on the A580, only crosses it.

Google maps shows the bit of road it's diverting around as being closed until the 14th.

I don't know if this is something temporary, but a mid-afternoon service 607 from Wigan to Bolton suddenly stopped in the Higher Ince area and the driver annnounced to the passengers that under instructions, the bus had to stop at that stop for 15 minutes.
Buses get up to 32 minutes to reach Hindley, so was probably waiting time because they got their much quicker than usual. Traffic on that stretch can be horrendous on a bad evening to the point that it can be quicker to walk!

It might actually help if the Ince Bar timing point (as it was historically referred to) was reinstated. Unfortunately it is one of those removed as Stagecoach stripped back timing points to have the minimum in the registration - even though you can have "timing information points" for publicity and service regulation purposes.

Indeed so, in my area that I moved to earlier this year, I was told the printed timetables for the 368 (and the 369 before it was terminated) always had a time for Heald Green, The Griffin, until that particular stripping-back of timing points took place. The printed timetable timing points now has nothing shown between the shops area of Cheadle Hulme and the Beefeater/Premier Inn complex on the Manchester border.

Long dwells on Bee Network services are incredibly common, I usually get 2 >5m dwells per journey.

Slightly off topic, but just thinking about potential development of cross (GM) boundary services - particularly with the proposed new town development in Adlington, Cheshire.

The developer is talking about improvements to public transport in the area...so logically this would include services into Greater Manchester. My understanding is that would need a service permit from TfGM and in deciding whether to grant a permit the proposed service would have to pass the following tests:
  • the proposed service will benefit persons making journeys on local services in the area to which the franchising scheme relates; and
  • the proposed service will not have an adverse effect on any local service that is provided under a local service (franchised) contract in the area to which the franchising scheme relates.
So...if (for example) a new service were to connect Adlington New Town, Poynton, Hazel Grove, Stepping Hill and Stockport (which would be an obvious one) then TfGM may well refuse the permit if it would extract income from existing services (192) between Hazel Grove and Stockport. Would this mean that the only way to get a new service would be to run non stop from the GM boundary to the final destination (or follow and unserved route to the destination). Both of which seem to me to make it more unlikely that a service would succeed commercially.

Is my thinking correct ?
