firstly im sorry my first post is asking for help and advice
right im trying to change my vocation in life and have always wanted to work on the trains so my question is how would i go about this
i come from a security background and need to change my carreer path
im in south manchester so only 2 minutes from the airport station
any help or info would be great

Hi Sando and welcome! The forum is here to help people so you've come to the right place, no need to apologise! I'd suggest as a starting point that you look in to what a Conductor role involves... You may be able to do an internet search to find a job description... Then look at your own experience and see how much relevant experience you have. If there are gaps, you may want to work on these e.g. cash handling, customer service.

Keep an eye out for vacancies on a regular basis and make sure your application is complete, no spelling mistakes and you clearly demonstrate that you meet all essential criteria.

Hope this helps as a general starting point, hopefully some qualified (or trainee) conductors will have more useful info to add.

Transpennine express have a depot at Manchester Airport so go onh their website and look at vacancies, the next step after TPE is Northern who have depots at Mcr Piccadilly, Mcr Victoria and Buxton. Go on Northernrail.org and look at vacancies, you need to be patient and if you get through the forst hurdle competition is fierce.

Although the closing date has expired but LOROL were advertising for Conductors with a decent wage packet!

I have worked along side Conductors and it's a decent job

1. Check out what the job entails
2. Research on train crew depots that have guards within 45 minutes of your home
3. Register with all the TOC's (train companies) that have these depots
4. Ensure you have email alerts enabled to inform you of vacancies
5. Apply for job

I think this will be your best chance. Do as much research into the companies and the job roles you will applying for and make up your own mind on answering the questions on the application forms taking advice as guidance only. A security background is a favourable asset for you for the role of a conductor also

Hi all, I am looking to apply to SWT to be a guard and was wondering whether anyone has recently gone through the process and can give me some feedback on whether there is a written test still? I applied 5/6 years ago and I go to pieces in tests and so failed the maths test, so this time I would like to be prepared and do some revision.
