becoming a track operative is proving difficult?

Hello to you all,

after recent applications to NR which have failed, I have started widening my paths by looking at agencies to obtain experience, the first step is proving to be somewhat more difficult than I imagined.

obtaining a PTS card.. to obtain this I need a company to sponsor me, I have been o the phone to a list of agencies this morning all which have said they have no interest to sponsor me as they have a backlog of guys waiting for work. One also quoted "getting in Network Rail is like winning the lottery, good luck, your up against may guys who have 15+ years of rail experience so I wouldn't even bother", very helpful.

I am not giving up, and I will continue to work my all to become a Operative for NR. Anyone else in the same position?

Reason I ask is there are a lot of de-vegetation contractors in need of operatives and willing to put employees through relevant training, may not be what you want to do long term but might just get your foot in the door Pts-wise

Do you know of anything like that happening in the Tyneside area?


At Ladder23, same situation as you more or less. Don't have any track experience and can't get my PTS to get on the ladder. Catch twenty two really sadly.

No idea of specific companies in that area to be honest, probably worth googling and ringing around.

My friend used to do some work for Lineside, but they're based in Nottingham I believe.

hey Christopher, I am from Luton in Bedfordshire and I can travel etc. If there is any way I can get some experience working in a Railway environment it would be great, just to add onto my NR applications.. It shows some keen then doesn't it.

If its easier I can PM you if you require more?

There's a company called cleartrak who do quite a lot of work on the rail, they have an office in Milton Keynes (I think), I'd give them a ring and see if they have any vacancies!

after some research today I noticed this could set me back around £1080.

Get yourself a job as a guard or a driver, then the TOC you're working for will put you through your PTS. Then you leave that and go and work for Nitwit Rail!!!

Id imagine if they take you on as an employee they would sponsor you and pay for the Pts etc. Although that's just a guess. Good luck buddy, hope it all works out.
