Yes, Northerns 150's are certainly due a good refurbishment - although that dosen't in anyway undermine their ultimate superiority as a class.

I had this problem on a Pacer in August, operated by Northern. I mentioned it to the guard when it terminated at Huddersfield, intended as a courtesy in case he wasn't aware rather than a moan. He was kind enough to show me the panel in the cab, which was set to off and said the train pretty much decided for itself whether the heating would be on or not.

Isn't it the case on both the 142s and 150s the heaters also give out all the waste heat generated by the engines so they can be blazing in summer even when they are switched off?

But in real life I would do any journey by 121, as it was such a well presented and comfortable thing to ride on.

A 1929 Charabanc was running a hertiage link facility in Ironbridge Gorge, Shropshire in the 1990s (http://www.wheels.co.uk/coach/vehicles.htm if you're interested.) I went on it and it certainly wasn't the most comfortable ride but to be running around 70 years after it was built shows how well it was made and how well it was maintained. I doubt a Pacer will be running a hertiage service in the late 2050s!

I agree with ex ATN 142s being miles better than the rest.

Despite me hating pacers, I changed my tune slightly yesterday when my train to work which is booked for a 142 or 144 (and is full and standing even then) was formed of a single 153 instead. To say it was packed would be an understatement! Give me a pacer over a 153 at morning rush hour any time!

Now you've changed your tune, you might want to change your avatar! Maybe you could even join that select band of pacer enthusiasts that inhabit these boards.

completely true, for instance Mk1s are amazingly comfortable for their age, even at mainline speeds on charters. Soft springing and deep seats filled with horse hair, thats the winning combination!

I remember when me and my dad went to North Wales to try and have a ride behind a 37, but all we got all day was 158s. when we did eventually cross paths with a 37 the Mk1 was so comfy I fell asleep, missing all the 37-ness.

I'm off to use one of my member days at the K&WVR with my two sons on Sunday. They've got a great new feature of running two trains (i.e. 45 min interval service) on Sundays throughout the year. They've always done this in Summer (two kettles), but on the winter version the extra set is a diesel, either the 108 or the German railbus - a sort of proto-pacer. Anyway, at the moment both are out of action (as is their class 20), and the diesel turn's having to be done by the class 25! My lordz!

If I enjoyed travelling on a Pacer, I would laugh at this point. Instead, I have the image of travelling on one at 75mph - i.e. top speed - on a single-track route with no buffer... and a 700ft plummet into the Atlantic below. Probably from Avonmouth.

First Buses aren't so bad, they are quick to replace old buses on busy routes, the bus conditions are not so bad and they get the job done...

Depends which divison of Worst Bus you're looking at. Some divisions are probably running new buses, but Worst Northampton seems to have inhereted every clapped out Volvo, Scania and Dennis from around the Worst empire. Unlike Stagecoach who seem to be running far newer buses on more frequent service patterns.

I'd add to that luxuriating in the first class comparment on a 442 as the bogies iron out any joints in the track while it glides along SWML to Weymouth. Give me a can of lager, a good book and a beautiful lady right by my side and I'd be a very happy man!

i've only travelled on 142 Pacer's between Workington and Carlisle on Cumbrian Coast, and i can honestly say that they aren't that bad!
ok, they can be a bit slow at accelerating and bouncy, but, with a 153 / 156, you feel every little bump across the line, the 142 pacer's glide along them gently!
isn't often we get the 142 Pacer's on here anymore. since the floods, we've had 156's or two 153's joined together, along with the DRS shuttle between Workington and Maryport (which i have to say is much better than the Northern Rail trains, despite the journey taking 15 minutes instead of 10).

I think one day 4 Merseytravel Pacers should be attached to 2 144s and put on a Virgin Trains London service, with the 144s representing First Class and the Merseytravel units representing standard class. I'd love to see the faces of all the business people who only catch the train when it's not practical to take their car.

Ideally do it for a service which Conserative MPs are travelling on for a party conference, then when Boris sees them he'll be thinking "What are these? Bendy buses on rails? Scrap them before they set on fire."
