Hello,
I went to Antwerp on a business trip and packed my camera to catch some impressions.
Antwerpen Centraal
An architectural marvel: Antwerpen Centraal station. The facade towards "Konigin Astridplein" (the German bus is a bit of a nuisance
)
Facade facing "De Keyserlei" by day and by night
The station has tracks on three levels: Two levels of tail tracks and through tracks on the lower level. A view into the hall at different times of day
Tail tracks on the top level
My favourite: The tail tracks on the middle level. I like the blue lighting
Zoom on a Siemens Desiro Mainline double on the middle level
The through tracks without and with trains
The clock is the first thing you see when you ride the escalator up from the lower level
The vestibule
View from stairs in the vestibule
Tram and Premetro
Antwerp had the plan to put the (narrow gauge) tram lines underground and then change from tram to a "real", standard gauge metro. The last part never happened. As far as I know several cities in Belgium had similar plans and Brussels is the only one that changed a sub-surface tram to a full-blown metro.
In Antwerp the underground station still pay tribute to these plans: They are marked as "premetro stations" on the map. At certain locations sleepers that have room for a third track are installed. The city had so far-reaching plans that several tunnels exists that are build for years but have never seen a tram because the funding dried up. In the last few years some of the tunnels were put into service.
These cubes with the premetro logo lead the way to underground stations
Premetro "Meir"
Premetro "Astrid" (if I remember correctly)
The tram stop "Centraal Station" next to the hotel allowed me to take pictures of different types of tram rolling stock. Old meets new
Trams at dawn
and at night
Different types of count down clocks are used to indicate the next tram: Old-school but functional
Modern but hard to read because the white makes them very bright
The newest type as a lot more contrast. The bars make up for the small font
As I work with Java and Linux as a software engineer (and went to Antwerp to attend a Java conference) this broken ticket validation machine made me smile: It has Linux and Java inside
Antwerp has a lot more to the see: The zoo, the Rubens house and the cathedral "Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal" at "Groenplaats"
Right next to the station: Chinatown
This wraps up my little compilation from Antwerp. Its a place worth visiting.
Cheers
Charly
