BBC2 Looking for a Train Driver...

BBC2 is looking for a train driver to take part in the second series of the current affairs documentary: Toughest place to be… a Train Driver.

This series takes British workers to do their jobs in some of the most challenging and difficult circumstances in the world, and this time we’re looking for a train driver!

It’s an exciting opportunity to experience and learn about a culture far removed from your own and to try out your job on the other side of the world.

Why on Earth would they need to? Generally the rules (either rulebook or employing company's) only cover major incident reporting or mentioning your employer and their business. If a driver wants to go off to the other side of the world in their own time and drive trains for a documentary then there's nothing stopping them as long as they keep to Hidden etc and don't mention their employer (unless the employer agrees of course).

Given the last series, during which they showed an intro with the employee with some clips of them carrying out their day-to-day jobs I imagine they will be contacting the employer once they find a suitable candidate to arrange for them to do some filming during working hours.

This is going to be something like one of the Indian suburban rail networks or some place in the back of beyond in Africa or Asia, no doubt. Knackered rolling stock, chaotic operating conditions and people wandering all over the tracks in front of you. Quite frankly that sounds like my worst nightmare (probably why Auntie thinks it will make such great telly).

It's one thing putting your hand up for something like this, but actually you have no idea exactly what you might be getting yourself into. Good luck to the poor fella that volunteers for this one.

Ah, just seen Emily's other posts to date. Looks like a hike over the Peruvian Andes is on the cards. Either that or the aforementioned Asian jungle (Thailand has been mooted).

my apologies Emily i seem to have been miss informed.

I was only told of this yesterday and it was a chance mentioning of it when the notice was found under a pile of paper work we were looking through. At no point has it being displayed to my knowledge at any of our depots from what i've seen (4 of our 5 depots).

i hope you find someone but none of the east coast drivers seems to know about it let alone what it entails.

This opportunity is a really great one for the companies involved, and is super positive for them so most are happy about this series. You can see in the past episodes how well the UK companies came across.

There are probably some drivers out there who'd love to be involved in something like this, but some contracts of emplyment forbid any contact with the media / press (mine included).

Yes understood- well that is why where possible I am contacting companies first so we can collaborate. Where there are drivers who are keen on being involved and with companies I haven't contacted, I can always contact their press and communications department to explain that I've put the word out and had some interest from someone in their company, but only under the proviso that I have the company's authorisation. I can make it clear that I was referred to them by the interested driver in the first instance so that I'm sure then the company would be content with the way it has been handled.
