At about 07:25 hrs on Thursday 1 August 2019, the driver of the Edinburgh portion of the Lowlander sleeper service from London Euston was unable to control the train’s speed on the approach to Edinburgh. He was unable to comply with the maximum permitted speed at Haymarket East Junction, and would have been unable to stop the train before the junction if there had been a conflicting train movement. The driver was also unable to stop the train at Edinburgh Waverley station. The train came to a stop approximately 650 metres beyond its intended stopping point at Edinburgh Waverley platform 11, after the train manager operated an emergency button in a coach.

That's happening in real life this week, with the Fort William sleeper being diverted via the extremely rare Coatbridge Sunnyside-Whifflet curve and Shotts due to the rock cutting strengthening works at Newbridge/Ratho.

The BBC has released the trailer for its forthcoming real-time thriller Nightsleeper, and announced that the drama will arrive on Sunday 15 September, with all episodes available on BBC iPlayer from 6am. On BBC One, the series will air on Sunday and Monday nights across three weeks from 9pm that night.

Alexandra Roach (The Light in the Hall) and Joe Cole (Gangs of London) lead the cast of Nightsleeper, written by BAFTA award-winning writer Nick Leather (Murdered For Being Different) and made my Fremantle’s Euston Films for the BBC.


Nightsleeper is a six-part series in which a train is ‘hackjacked’ while travelling from Glasgow to London, and suddenly finds itself on an uncertain journey with an even less certain destination. Part fast-moving heart-in-the-mouth action-adventure and part twisty-turny whodunnit detective story, it’s a roller coaster ride set across a single night where no-one is ever quite who they seem. Leading the fight are Joe Roag (Cole), an off-duty police officer who is a passenger on the train, and Abby Aysgarth (Roach), the acting technical director at the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). To stop the train, they’ll have to work out exactly who’s behind this. But are they fighting a hostile state, a terrorist organisation, or organised crime? Who is the self-styled ‘Driver’ who seems to be one step ahead of their every solution?

It does say that the sleeper train "is on course for a collision course! With a freight train! Transporting tanker! Of gas!" The exclamation marks are in the Radio Times.

The CGI looks quite ropey, but it seems like perfectly enjoyable thriller schlock.

Also, the trailer seems to use London Victoria to demonstrate the dangers that hackers can inflict by uh... disrupting a departure board by making it look like a phone screen that's been dropped off a multi-storey car park?

In the trailer there is a scene where someone is being lowered from a helicopter and you can see the pantograph up. No doubt all the rail staff will be shown as dead thick.
