Trainspotting hobby 80 years older than thought

A new record of trainspotting has been discovered from 1861, 80 years earlier than the hobby was first thought to have begun.

The National Railway Museum found a reference to a 14 year old girl writing down the numbers of engines heading in and out of Paddington Station.

Colin Patterson reports.

People who like to dress up as if they work on the railway to make themselves feel important?

That must be a bit distracting for the drivers.
(and is that not a bit cold in winter?) ;)

Spotters really don't help their own public image. "We're ferrous equinologists". Bore on...

Probably not (or if so, not many). There are other websites more aimed at the spotter market.

As for one of them denying that he's a spotter. Well, he is a spotter. Many rail enthusiasts are not spotters (similarly a car enthusiast isn't necessarily a car spotter either!) but he is, so I don't know why he is denying it.

Yeah that was a bit cringeworthy.

Just admit that you are a spotter and get on with it. If people are not going to respect you as a spotter, they certainly are not going to respect you because you used an alternative word.

That guy was a train spotter no doubt. And the young lad they interviewed (also coincidentally called Alex as it seems) I didn't see why he needed the high viz bag and what appeared to be a hard hat.

Doesn't half get on my wick when spotters wear PPE when they don't need to and are clearly in public areas.

As a rail enthusiast/spotter myself, please explain why I would need other people's 'respect' to enjoy my hobby?

You don't. I was just giving an example how using a different term does not necessary help with whatever reason may lie behind it.

I am getting more at the fact (although I didn't mention this directly) that it is ill-advised by National Rail

National Rail Enquiries Guidelines for Rail Enthusiasts said:
Avoid wearing anything which is similar in colour to safety clothing, such as high -visibility jackets, as this could cause confusion to DRIVERS or other railway employees.

Would the lad with the hi-vis bag, trousers, and hardhat, be Alex Metroman (coachalex1996)? - certainly looked like him

It is him, and he's an apprentice track worker. He was filmed after a shift, hence the hard hat hanging from his kit bag. Dunno about the other bod, though.

If that is the case, and it was immediately after a shift, I suppose you could say he isn't simply wearing PPE to feel important as a spotter.
