BBC Panorama: Abuse in the care system

The program aired last night, showed secret filming in a care home for adults with learning disabilities in Bristol, and the abuse they were subjected to by so called "carers" was absolutely disgusting. One woman with learning difficulties had cold water poured over her and was left outside on a cold day. Another was teased and slapped by another member of staff. It was sickening. I was glad to hear this morning that 4 members of staff have been arrested.

The care system is down the toilet. I have a close friend who works at a private home and I can tell you now, some of the things she tells me are absolutely appalling. They've got to reform the whole system and get tough on the people who work in it. It seems to me that if you can walk and push a wheelchair, they'll let you join and care for the residents. I know of people who were able to work for a certain care company (who I cannot name) who didn't even get their criminal records checked. I've heard story after story of terrible staff, maladministration, low funding and careless employers who don't give a hoot about the standards at all. As somebody who works in the Government I will admit that the care system is in a state and desperately needs a fresh agenda.

I found the programme rather shocking myself, what a bunch of bullying b@#$%^ds. I can't help but have complete revulsion for them, and ,I am ashamed to say, feelings of violence.

While Panorama typically belongs in the pit of journalistic slurry (the one next door to the hole-of-despair where the Daily Mail lurks), they occasionally churn out something thought provoking.

The care industry is mostly about everything but care. It attracts many of the type of people who really should be nowhere near vulnerable people. In saying that, I am including those at the top as well as those at the lower end of the employment scale.

Having said that, there are some very good places, with excellent staff. Far too many of the bad apples though, which may have something to do with the high potential profits and low wages paid by unscrupulous owners.
