I have just watched this programme, Andy Burnham [Greater Manchester mayor] was asked to apologize even though he doesn't have the same powers as the London mayor. He wants to improve the railways but central government wont allow it. Chris failing was asked does the buck stop with you? He said sorry, But then went on a tangent about how much is being invested in the north. Its a joke, Scrap high speed rail and heavily invest in the railways we have now- That last bit was a comment a viewer sent in and I agree.

I would have liked to have seen more discussion of the industrial relations issues. I suppose there's only so much they can include in half an hour.

At least Grayling actually apologised. Most of the programme seemed a reasonable reflection of the current situation. But of course the politicians wanted to play politics rather than talk real-world solutions and the BBC just had to include viewers' comments without fact-checking them. Half an hour was just too short to explore the issues in any meaningful way.

If the money was used on the existing network do you honestly think the proportion of it being spent on northern infrastructure would be the same of better than HS2? The Ordsall chord was severely delayed by a legal challenge and the Hope Valley passing loops might have already started construction if it wasn't for another legal challenge. So lets bin detailed plans and guarenteed funding for a new line into Manchester and the basis of one to Warrington + Liverpool. Obviously lines to Chesterfield (for Sheffield), Leeds and York is a waste of money to. Then when the London to Birmingham and Litchfield section inevitable gets built (the early stages of construction have already started), we can be happily filled with a sense of grievance about lack of rail spending in the north...

No-one picked up on the fact that what Grayling caused 'fully refurbished trains' includes 150s as old as or older than Pacers, so are the Pacers being scrapped because they are old, because they are rubbish or because they are smaller?

It's worth remembering Northern don't operate any DCO/DOO trains and don't plan to introduce any in the next few months. Cancellations currently happening due to not having enough staff without some staff working overtime is a point more worthy of discussion than the RMT striking over DCO/DOO plans which Northern say aren't complete, when Northern have much higher priorities than sorting out DCO/DOO plans.

It seems Jake Berry was trying to shift blame to TfN for wanting ambitious improvements included in the franchise specification. Like it's TfN's fault Network Rail didn't deliver schemes they informed both DfT and TfN they would have completed before December 2017.

It's worth remembering Northern don't operate any DCO/DOO trains and don't plan to introduce any in the next few months. Cancellations currently happening due to not having enough staff without some staff working overtime is a point more worthy of discussion than the RMT striking over DCO/DOO plans which Northern say aren't complete, when Northern have much higher priorities than sorting out DCO/DOO plans.

I disagree. Indiustrial action is causing a lot of disruption to passengers and is worthy of discussion.

But what do you want Northern to say - we focusing on the introduction of DCO in December 2019 and consequently everything else is put on the back burner?

It would be nice if both sides could be asked why this dispute is raging indefinitely when other TOC's have managed to settle the role of the guard. They seem to be far too able to conduct their little contretemps away from the public glare at the moment.

Ask Northern and the RMT separately and you'll just get the same responses we've already had hundreds of times i.e. RMT saying "Evil privately owned German owned company wants to axe the guards to put profits before passengers" and Northern saying "We have a franchise commitment to introduce brand new driver controlled trains which will improve passenger's journeys and have guaranteed all guards will remain in employment on their existing pay grade."

Put them in the same room as each other and it wouldn't work on a live show - it would just be bickering.

Arguably we didn't get that much that was new out of those who were on the show. However it did introduce the arguments to the public at a wider level and give them more of chance to make up their own minds.
