I will guarantee that almost all the people shown in that film are not real ale drinkers

With respect, that's a rather snobby statement.

Just because they don't fit your profile of a real ale drinker that doesn't mean they aren't one.

Were they using the train to go from pub to pub....YES
Did they say they were on the Real Ale Trail......YES

and more importantly

Did they drink Real Ale at those pubs....YES

So I'm sorry to ****** on your chips, they are Real Ale Drinkers.

Thank you for your very mature response to my comments, it's much appreciated.

Shall I take that as a no then?

I still maintain I am correct. Very few of the people shown on the film looked like the natural constituency of a real aler. Sorry, but they don’t. Ex railway man has set out the situation quite succinctly. They look like lads off for a pub crawl.

The real issue, however, is how you deal with the aftermath of a massive ****** up descending on what are mainly unmanned stations and small trains.

As a real ale drinker and NOT a member of CAMRA, I would not consider a large number of those filmed to be real ale drinkers.

To answer Darlo's previous comment, yes I know what real ale is all about, probably drinking it before you were born. I'm also not a member of CAMRA, was many years ago but I felt they were becoming too elitest and were forgetting about the ordinary real ale drinker and trying to become a snob ridden organisatrion.

The point I was trying to make was, just because the guys in the programme didn't conform to a certain dress sense or behavour pattern it doesn't make them non real ale drinkers.

Whether you are a member of CAMRA or not, it's not a masonic right of passage to be considered a real ale drinker. If you drink it, you are it. Simples really.

like the natural constituency of a real aler

WTF! Are you actually stereotyping what a real ale drinker is? Can't wait to see your answer to this one.

Both you and Darlo are missing what I am on about.

Basically, yes, they are on a pub crawl but they are going to pubs to drink real ale, so that makes them real ale drinkers. Just because they don't conform to a certain dress sense or behavour pattern it doesn't make them non real ale drinkers.

with respect i think you are missing the point. I am saying they are NOT drinking real ale.

I bet most are drinking strong larger, cider or a bitter like John Smiths Smooth.

Your proof for this is?

Did you see them order and drink the real ale in all the pubs?
Pubs do sell other alcoholic (and non alcoholic) drinks you know!
They are more likely to be lager loats than real ale drinkers.

Sorry to butt in but surely the whole point of being called a real ale drinker is because you are, by definition, drinking real ale? I wasn't aware that you were required to join CAMRA, dress and act in a certain way in order to be classed as such.

I shall remember next time that in order to be classed as a lager drinker I must wear Burberry, beat the hell out of some poor unsuspecting bloke, spit at a copper and get arrested for drunk and disorderly. Then I'll be part of the club then!

I'm not wishing to be rude BTW. I'm just trying to point out how silly this all seems to be. You drink what you drink. The public in general probably couldn't care less what you drink. They only care if you cause trouble. Real ale drinker or not.

Maybe he is missing the point but so are you, stating whether they are drinking real ale drinkers or not by the way folk look just doesnt work out.

Seeing the state of some who visited a formerly local pub to me, that has consistenly been on CAMRA's good beer guide and steadily throw sheep shagger, blaven, young pretender doon their throat only for it to show face on the pavement towards the end of the night proves you wrong.......unless of course this has only ever happened in this one pub??

He who lives in a glass house....

I'm an ordinary Real Ale drinker and CAMRA member. I also drink lager, cider, wine, G&Ts and the odd Brandy or Single Malt. Care to pigeon-hole me?

I was actually talking to someone who ownes one of the 'Ale Trail' pubs and they said the biggest problem they had was from the lager drinkers. I believe there was something last year about some of the pubs only allowing regulars in at certain times.

Why does it matter, how has a simple discussion a simple documentary turned into complaining about this, that and the other, and now it has ended up with a big arguement, I come on this forum and thread to find information and have a disccusion, not to read through an arguement.

Whilst I can see what you are trying to imply, are you saying that arguments shouldn't be a part of this thread? Isn't the whole purpose of a forum (and thread) to exchange opinions which other people can debate and reply to? It'd be a bit boring if we all just commented 'yeah, great isn't it?' and agreed with everything everyone said!

This thread started off as...BBC Documentary..."The Railway"

How did it recently become a one-topic subject totally unrelated to that subject matter? Would it not have been better to have opened a new thread to discuss that particular subject, especially as there seems to be enough forum members to keep that subject going for quite some time.

Just an observation made by an average run-of-the-mill forum member with no axe to grind on the nuances of the new topic that seems to have caused so much ill-feeling that has been self-evident from the reading of these recent postings.

May I refer you to the recently-issued and revised forum rules that were recast specifically to make sure that everyone on this forum was clear as to what was... and what was... not deemed to be acceptable posting behaviour. All forum members had the opportunity to be part of this rules revision and many forum members took advantage of this opportunity.

Dont worry, after tonights show with FGW, the real ale/not real ale drinkers wont be able to get a word in edgeways. I'm sure the anti FGW crew will be out in force. ;)

Hi

Can anyone clarify this,

From what i remember i picked up a leaflet from a northern station years ago with northern rail promoting this real ale train or is it on the website.

It started out for genuine drinkers aimed at a certain group to help with the revenue of the line, but the typical happens, the YOBS get involved and spoil it.

Feel sorry for the train crew/drivers at other TOC's who sign this route. There should be some means of keeping the drinkers off the platform.

Cheers

I'm not sure what that has to do with anything :s I was just saying, debates tend to exist on forums, that's their entire foundation. I wasn't discussing or alluding to any rights or wrongs within anyone's posts.

The version operated by FGW in Cornwall seems to have attracted the type of passengers northern were trying for, as seems very calm.

Maybe they'll feature the FGW RailAleTrails on their branch lines and we'll all be able to argue wthe merits of Tribute, Doom Bar, Betty Stoggs and Cornish Knocker. Much more civilised affair than what those Northerners get up to.

Betty Stoggs is brewed on the same industrial estate to where I work so get all the brewery smells up my nose most days!
