Hi guys,
I am a freelance journalist with an interest in rail issues and I am currently engaged in writing an article for Rail Express magazine on the subject of Network Rail's current trial with a modified battery powered Class 379 Electrostar on the Manningtree to Harwich branch line http://www.networkrailmediacentre.co.uk/News-Releases/Batteries-included-Prototype-battery-powered-train-carries-passengers-for-first-time-2230.aspx.
I was wondering if anyone in the know could possibly plug some gaps in my information for me, just in case the respective people I've approached on this subject are slow, or fail, to get back to me on specific points (rough deadline of the end of this month for this).
First, Network Rail appears to have commissioned this trial which is a project involving Bombardier, Abellio Greater Anglia, Valence (which supplied the batteries) and the Rail Executive arm of the Department of Transport.
However, in 2013 the DfT appears to have commissioned Lloyds Register to undertake some research on battery powered trains http://www.lr.org/en/news/news/battery-trains.aspx/ and I was wondering whether anyone knows if the two projects are connected in any way.
Secondly, I am including some historical information on battery powered trains to support the article and I was therefore also wondering if anyone could tell me about the (or point me in the direction of some good web content) Southern Region MLVs (Class 419) including whether any of these have been preserved.
