I've just bought a new mobile phone battery from an independant retailer for my Nokia, and, whilst Nokia produce them with their own branding/hologram, the one I have bought has no branding, yet it is almost identical otherwise. Is there any risk in using the unbranded one? Many thanks.

I believe it may invalidate the warranty, but I would fire it in regardless.
Just don't leave it unattended, and don't be too alarmed if it overheats and sets fire to your ear.

I am aware of dodgy phone chargers spontaneously combusting but have not heard anything directly about batteries.

Lithium batteries can fail quite spectacularly, and even big companies can fall foul: Sony suffered a lot of ill press after a laptop battery exploded during use in Japan, circa 2006. (Videos likely exist online.) After an initial phase of denial, they started an enormous battery recall, for several brands.
