Basingstoke To London Euston

Firstly, sorry its of rather late notice, but could anyone help me out here with a rather annoying query I have?

Im planning to do London Midlands Great Escape tomorrow – involving either the 08:46, 08:54 or 09:46 services from Euston – but could anyone help me find a fairly decent fare to get to Euston? I know this is in the morning peak, and this is where the confusion and annoyance is happening – especially when LM’s morning peak seems to finish at 08:45, Unlike of course,our beloved South West Trains…:roll:

I only ask as having looked myself in the past I am yet to find a way out of paying for the standard day/ open single/ return, other than splitting at Basingstoke and as someone who normally uses Virgin when going north it would rather handy.

Basingstoke to London Waterloo - £31.60

London Waterloo - Euston TFL Zone 1 - £2 each way

I use WIN - EUS or WIN to London Terminals and the 59/68 bus on the bus pass if I forget.

No it's not - the Northern line direct to Euston is quickest. You're thinking of Waterloo to Kings Cross where there is no direct route.

It's quite fashionable to moan about SWT, but that is a bit of a generalisation, and you are comparing chalk and cheese as far as I can see.

There is no standard time for offpeak fares to become available, in the SE it will depend on both direction of travel and distance, and whether or not you are going into a London Terminal. Basingstoke to Euston is bound to be a peak fare at that time, it isn't just an SWT thing...

LM fares INTO Euston from places such as Milton Keynes don't start until around about 0930 either (0920 as it happens - somewhat later than the Basingstoke - Waterloo at 0854.)

The suburban area has a flat 0930 (B1) restriction to Waterloo, those beyond the suburban area use C4 (arrive 1000 or later). In many cases, B1 and C4 are the same train.

e.g. Guildford - Waterloo CDR has B1 validity. This is the 0934 arrives Waterloo at 1013. This is also the first train from Guildford which could use C4.

That's also the quickest way to KGX - but trust me, it's also faster than the Northern line!

The change between Bakerloo and Victoria at Oxford Circus is on the same level - just run across the platforms. You can often leave on the train you just got on BEFORE the train you got off leaves (if you follow me)! So it's just as if it were a direct line, but is much faster than the Northern. (6 stops vs 7 - even with the change - it's faster. I do it every day.)

You're having a laugh! To get from the concourse at Kings + to the Victoria line is at least a 5 minute walk for me, and I always walk down the escalator and weave in and out of people, or walk on the walls to avoid people walking slowly.

I'd get the Northern line from Waterloo to Euston; it's a direct train and the Charing + branch of the Northern line is very rarely busy at the levels of the Victoria line. I get a seat every morning. Admittedly the Charing + branch is quite slow because of the number of stations, but in the morning you very often have to let a Victoria line train leave because it's so busy (although that's going Southbound not Northbound).

For Paddington the Circle and Hammerline trains are infrequent and slow. Usually getting checked at either Baker St and/or Edgeware Rd. Jump onto the bakerloo line and the trains are fast and frequent. Same for the Vicky line. Not just me - almost everyone at work agrees these are the best routes.

Quickest way from Waterloo to Kings Cross is:
Bakerloo - Oxford Circus - Victoria Line - Kings Cross. By a LONG way it's the fastest. Back of Bakeloo line train, at Oxford Circus turn left, and as soon as you're roud that corner you'll see the back end of a Vicky line train. Get on there, and that's you at the closest exit for Kings Cross. I've been doing it since 2003, and trust me, it's the fastest way from Waterloo to KGX.

It even beats Northern Line to Euston 9 times out of 10 if you get of the Victoria line that one stop earlier. People assume direct routes are the quickest on LUL - sometimes yes, but not always and not in this case.

But unless you're elderly or disabled, getting from the concourse at KGX to the Vicky line platform takes ~60 seconds. Exit front of station, turn right down stairs, at bottom of stairs make a hairpin right and down the next stairs. Through the ticket barrier, take the right-hand escalators (walking down them of course) and then on the left is the Victoria line platform Southbound.

I'm not arguing about seats - I rarely if ever get a seat, but for a few minutes in rush hour - who cares?
