Please use full station names when mentioned for the first time (especially in the title) to make life easier for people who wish to help.

Changed it for you this time but please take note next time.

Are you looking to return to Basingstoke afterwards?

What times are you expecting to travel? Are you intending to travel on a weekday or at weekends? Any Railcard?

What day of the week?
What time?
Will the return be the same day?

Your options for Heathrow are really going to be the railair coach from Woking or the Piccadilly line changing at South Kensington or cross London transfer to Paddington for Heathrow Connect (cheaper than the express)

You will need at a minimum 2 tickets for this journey.

This is likely to be reasonably expensive due to the time of day.

As a baseline the combination of the route and time you suggest would cost £53.30 without anything clever being done.

We will probably take you to Gatwick by changing at Clapham Junction and avoiding London on 1 ticket and then from Clapham Junction to Heathrow on a 2nd ticket going through London.

Basingstoke - Gatwick Airport
Route Not Via London
Anytime Day Return
£23.00

should suit your needs for travelling to Gatwick Airport and back. You may change at Clapham Junction on this ticket but you may not go into Waterloo or Victoria.

You will also need a Zones 1-6 Off-Peak Day Travelcard for £8.50 when back in London (after 0930 I would hope) which would be valid for travel to/from Heathrow Airport using the Piccadilly Line.

Total: £31.50

This was my first thought though I hadn't got as far as pricing it.

The travelcard may be bought from Basingstoke or Clapham Junction or Gatwick and needs to be bought before you leave Clapham Junction to go to London.

All your trains that pass through Clapham Junction will need to stop there as you are changing tickets there. So for example when going from London (Waterloo most likley) back to Basingstoke the train will need to Call at Calpham Junction, the same goes for travelling from Gatwick to Heathrow the train to Victoria will need to stop at Clapham Junction.

There are exceptions but for the purposes of keeping it simple and the fact that they are unlikely to be relevant I shan't go into them.

Surely the only ticket change at Clapham is when he uses the travelcard - on the way out there is no ticket change therefore no need to call at Clapham Junction (Though I'd imagine everything does).

Yes when changing from the Basingstoke - Gatwick ticket to the travelcard and vice versa..

Going from Basingstoke to Gatwick it is irrelevent as the ticket is routed 'not London' therefore they will need to change train at Clapham Junction anyway.

At that time of day only the 04:54 05:39, 05:59, 06:35, 06:51 and then the 08:16, call at Clapham Junction going towards London. During the daytime there are 2 an hour that do not call.

You use the outward portion of the return ticket to go to Gatwick Airport first (via Clapham Junction but not Waterloo or Victoria). After you pick up your friend, you return to London area, using the return portion of your ticket to get to somewhere like East Croydon or Clapham Junction (provided that your train stops there). You can then switch to the Travelcard from there for travel around London.

You still have the Clapham Junction (or East Croydon or wherever you switched tickets earlier) - Basingstoke part of your return portion unused which you can later use to get back to Basingstoke.

You can buy your Travelcard at either Basingstoke or Gatwick Airport, so don't have to wait until you get back to within the zones.

Yup - I'm terrible at explaining things like this. :)

Just to be clear its a travelcard from Clapham Junction you want. If you just ask for a "travelcard" without specifying where from at Basingstoke or Gatwick you will get one that includes travel from Basingstoke or Gatwick and will be a lot more expensive.

We haven't considered OP's friend who needs to go Gatwick - Central London - Heathrow.

I'd suggest an FCC only one day off peak travelcard - around £12 from memory. Use this to travel by FCC to East Croydon where it's legit to switch to a Southern train to Clapham Junction. OP starts his travelcard journey there and both go into Victoria or Waterloo

Both then have a travelcard to travel around central London and out to Heathrow

A cheaper alternative route if
(a) you are only transferring between airports and do not require Z1; and
(b) you do not have much luggage.

You can travel from Clapham Junction to Heathrow using the Overground via West Brompton and Earl's Court for a substantial amount of £1.40 (or £2.60 during peak hours 6-9am or 4-7pm) using Oyster PAYG. Not any slower a route compared to going via Victoria and using the District Line from there. I did this once this way in just one hour. There are five trains an hour going this route from CLJ during the day. The Overground platforms are pretty close to the west entrance gateline so touching-in and -out are not a significant detour.

Pros: avoid Zone 1 and travel in peace; much cheaper at £2.80 return compared to £8.50 via Z1.
Cons: one more change; lower frequency.

HTH.

£12.50 but only valid if departing Gatwick Airport at or after 0932, which may not be viable (the OP has not stated when he proposes to leave Gatwick).
