To be fair, its first hand from a driver, not some regurgitated story doing the rounds.

How can we stop crusty pedants from failing to understand that language evolves and as long as what is being said is understood then there really isn't a problem.
In other news, Virgin issue staff memo regarding correctly locking cab doors...
How can we stop creeping Americanisms? It's not the Daily Mirror's take on it. It's the Daily Mirror's versión of the story.

I was going to say they need to do this as it's almost impossibly to get into the cab as you have to walk through the kitchen etc to get to the cab!
If the unit was running in its normal formation, then Standard would have been at the back, which I think is just a bike storage area.
I understood that the expression "- a take -" on something was derived from television, borrowed probably from earlier sound recording studios. "Quiet studio, Creeping Americanisms take one, and - - Action" - sort of thing.
Assuming you mean the door from coach A into the bike storage area, then isnt it just a push button like the carriage intersection doors?ScouserGirl:2415554 said:If the unit was running in its normal formation, then Standard would have been at the back, which I think is just a bike storage area.
But still that door should have been locked so no one could get in! But what an odd ball just to hijack it to press the horn...
Still is in my view, if the G***dian ran this story it'd sound as if the person who illegally entered the cab was some sort of wasisit or was far right or other drivel that the G***dian comes out with.
Can you provide some evidence for that view? And what is a "wasisit"?
while the standard of reporting is comically poor i am sure we can all think of individuals who might consider this kind of behaviour to be acceptable.

Anyway - how hard can it be. Those drivers only sit there pushing buttons and pulling levers. You could get a semi trained monkey to do that!

Here is a sort of story about bashing and being in the cab, it is a good story and very true believe me.
My mate and I were on a 7 day East Midlands Ranger/ ticket in July 1979, when the Deltics were gradually being replaced by HSTs.
We caught the 1005 ex Kings Cross from Doncaster to York (55021)without a valid ticket from Doncaster and the train terminated in a bay at York. We went up to the loco and the driver invited us into the cab of 55021, he then said that the shunting engine was going to take the empty coaches off our train , then we would pull clear, the coaches shunted back where 55021 would go on the front of the train ready to work it back to Kings Cross.
He remained in the northbound end cab of the move and told us we could stay on the Deltic for this shunt.
After we had pulled clear and were waiting at the shunting signal to go back on to the coaches another Deltic (55007) appeared and went onto our coaches.
The driver said he didn't know what was happening and went onto the phone, he said we had to move southwards towards Holgate Bridge, I was to drive !!!!! and he would look out for the signals, don't forget we were still in the north end cab.
So I got to Drive a Delly and I never even had a ticket.
When we came to a halt the driver took control and we pulled into the station area and parked up on a through line. There were some permanent way guys working nearby and when they saw us alight they noticed we didn't have any uniform, one said, "Look at them, not wearing any uniform" Number 2 replied, "Yes, they must be Cockneys, they do want they want"
Part 2 to follow
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Part 2
The driver earlier had told us he would be working the 1811 York-KGX and we could have a cab ride back to Doncaster with him.
We then went across to the 1411 York-KGX (55007) where we went to Selby, then 55009 on the 1220 KGX-York back from Selby to York then a HST from York to Doncaster, all this without a valid ticket.
At Doncaster we were due to head north but spotted a Travelling Ticket Inspector board our train, so it was Plan B and we caught the 1722 DMU to Selby.
55011 was hauling the 1811 hours York-KGX and we duly had our Deltic cab ride back to Doncaster, if Carlsberg did bashing days.........
I am sorry if this post has offended anybody but that's just how it was in the 70s/early 80s, the good old days.
Gus, I am offended because it doesn't work like that anymore :razz:I am sorry if this post has offended anybody but that's just how it was in the 70s/early 80s, the good old days.
Of course he can't. Like I have a prejudice against the Daily Mail and the Daily Express, he has one against the Guardian. The difference is I admit to it.
Many years ago, a Chester based driver (sadly no longer with us) was a regular at the pub I worked at & invited me to take a cab ride up to Holyhead & back.
On the day, I met him just after he signed on & was about to clamber aboard the 47 when the bloke realised a footplate inspector was getting on; so I was quickly ushered into the rear cab!
Upto Holyhead, with the back end of a Mk 2 to look at for 85 miles! Upon arrival at Holyhead, the 47 was diagrammed on a Freightliner & as the inspector had gone elsewhere so back into the front can for the return leg.
And no, it wouldn't happen today....

Let us all make allowances for the Daily Mirror, as the word Crewe has as many as FIVE letters in it, which is a long word for the journalists on the Daily Mirror and sub-editors to come to terms with.
