Travelling to Glasgow tomorrow with advances Barry to Crewe and Crewe Glasgow. When I originally bought my ticket 12.09 from Crewe arrives 15.17 now it 17.13. I asked at Barry station could I amend my Barry ticket from 8.50 to 8.05 Cardiff-Crewe to enable me to catch the 11.09 Crewe Glasgow which would then arrive with changes at 15.35
Was told I had to pay a fee and amount of the difference was also told this is classed by Arriva Trains Wales as two tickets and not a continuation of a journey. Was this correct in view of the WCML difficulties and can I claim although reluctantly delay repayment. Thanks

If the departure time of your Barry ticket remains the same, then I agree with the advice you're given.

If the Barry train no longer departs when your original booking specified, I think being permitted to travel on an earlier train to maintain a connection is reasonable, and I feel it should be done without a fee.

So you only changed the first ticket, from Barry to Crewe? If so, then that's correct. Virgin have lifted restrictions for passengers to/from Scotland only.

The disappointment is the lack of help between the rail companies I now arrive nearly 2 hours late due to no fault of my own. Will be catching the 08.50 from Cardiff and 12.09 Crewe has booked. If I could have caught the 08.05 I would be in Glasgow at around the correct time that I originally booked

At least if you are delayed (which looks unavoidable if you are going to travel), you may claim compensation under Virgin Trains' Delay Repay scheme. This will apply to both tickets and if you are more than an hour late you'll get all of your fare back.

I couldn't agree more that it's a very passenger-unfriendly stance. They are all doing a pretty shocking job of it.

If you can use alternative transport, you're entitled to a full refund of both tickets with no admin fee, although this may prove rather admin-heavy on your part to claim.
