Barry Elliot (Chuckle) has died aged 73

Barry Chuckle, one half of the comedy duo the Chuckle Brothers, has died aged 73 after a short period of ill health.

The entertainer, whose real name was Barry Elliott, starred in ChuckleVision with his brother Paul on the BBC between 1987 and 2009.

Paul said: "I've not just lost my brother, I've lost my theatrical partner of many, many years and my very best friend."

Fans have paid tribute on Twitter, with many thanking him "for the laughs".

Britain has lost a happy, harmless man who only wanted to make people laugh.

Barry Chuckle, who spent the best years of his life falling off ladders, hitting his brother in the head with a plank and reciting catchphrases, died at the age of 73 this morning – astonishing a nation who thought he had been endlessly preserved in his late 40s.

Barry made an immense contribution to home improvement and DIY, as it is thanks to him that nobody who grew up in Britain is capable of moving furniture without saying ‘To me, to you’ and stepping in an open can of paint.

His brother Paul said that losing Barry was losing his best friend, and on behalf of so many people – Paul, if you read this, we feel the same way.

Endless daftness and nonsense delivered with good cheer and optimism britghtened up more after-school afternoons than can be counted.

In his memory, everyone in Britain is invited to get a settee wedged in a door at 3pm, synchronised across the country.

I fondly remember Chucklevision from the early 90s - amazed to learn it continued until 2009.

Sorry to hear that a clearly popular entertainer has died at only 73, but for myself I never found this pair funny in any way at all — like virtually all the BBC comic acts they just left me completely cold.

I grew up with ChuckleVision so am quite saddened by this, still remember the guy from most episodes 'AND NO SLACKING!' - turns out he is a real life brother of Paul and Barry!

Spookily both Dale Winton and the Chuckle Brothers have ended up on Channel 5 to try and revive their career a bit and passed away shortly after now! Hope Paul O' Grady doesn't have another one of his heart attacks any time soon...

When I was young I found Chucklevision entertaining but didn't constantly laugh at all the silliness. On the other hand with Rowan Atkinson's Mr Bean character I did laugh all the way through the episodes, at least the first time I saw them.

With it being aimed at children there were always going to be repetitive elements as that's normal for children's programs whether it was Chucklevision or Bodger and Badger. It's less clear why adult programs like Little Britain ended up being so repetitive.

I didn't realise that either. Turns out there were 4 Elliott brothers with the elder two giving themselves the stage name the Patton brothers, meaning he always appeared in the credits as Jimmy Patton.

I’m not sure how well the humour would translate internationally (and they were primarily childrens’ entertainers).

That said, in my experience, the Dutch tend to have a similar sense of humour to the Brits (and a similar penchant for drinking ).
