Barrow Hill 2/4/11

I am planning on visiting Barrow Hill Roundhouse next Saturday (2nd April) as part of a Derbyshire Wayfarer. Does anyone know if there is anything out of the ordinary up at Barrow Hill at the moment and up to next weekend?

This will be my first visit on a non event day and am looking forward to be able to get some good photos around the roundhouse and yard without having people all over the place. I have been promising myself a trip for about 3 years now!

Has anyone been on a non event day? Do you get good access around the yard, or is there still a lot of areas fenced off?

hello mate i was up there last sunday, could access half the round house and visualise the yard from the viewing areas, 57011 was there as was one of the drs 20's ( cant remember which one of the top of my head), lots to look at and see, i now intend to go back on an event day and have a proper rummage , went over to peak rail at the same time and a look at the heritage shunter trust, again somewhere i intend to revisit

I do like it up there on the event days but it is very very busy, and if you want to get any good photos or videos without people in your way then you will struggle. And if you plan on going on an event day but still want to look round, don't choose the beer festival, most of the site is closed off then, for obvious reasons, but the beer festival is a wonderful day, get there early, and its worth paying the extra few quid for a taxi up from the station instead of the free bus, unless you get to the station early enough to be closer to the front of the line. Quite often people who are also going to an event will split a taxi with you.

I went to Model Rail Live last year and it was superb, although the sales tent you had to go through to get into the roundhouse was badly planned, hundreds of people wanting to look at the stalls in a very tight space, not leaving room for people who just wanted to get through, one thing I hope they change this year.

really enjoyed my time there, stuck a fiver in the jar but considering other than your moral compass its free , its not a bad place to loose your self for a bit! plenty to look at and make sure you look round every corner or you will miss something, loads tucked away which i didn't get to see, that is why i want to go back , hopefully by then the extension on the peak rail into matlock station will be complete and with the ecclesbourne valley railway extension there is plenty to look at in a small geographical area

I plan to head to Chesterfield early from Langley Mill for breakfast, get to Barrow Hill for opening, spend a couple of hours there and then get around as much by train as I can.

I had a great time there in February, went in the DPS' shed and saw Royal Highland Fusilier, Alycidon, the Baby Deltic-in-progress, Tulyar and one of the two surviving cabs! PLus all the Deltic memorabilia there

Crikey, I never realised the DPS had set up shop at Barrow Hill. Must find a weekend to drive up to the site.

The two cabs: No.8 and No.21? My memory fails me; though I recall that one of them was, for ages, visible on the GW mail line between Cholsey and Goring, unceremoniously parked in someone's back green.

Yup, those two. At first I just saw the one cab peeping out from behind of Tulyar and thought it was another loco

So, as the plan stands, it will be the first train from Langley Mill in the morning, 07:29, to Chesterfield. Breakfast in Wetherspoons and then Barrow Hill. Work our way back to Matlock for the Peak Rail and then Derby for the Brunswick and Sheffield for the Sheffield Tap.
