One common fare evasion tactic for quite a number of regular dishonest travellers in BR NSE days was to get hold of an orange Hi-Vis vest, put it on and walk on to any train, nod to the platform staff saying 'Watcha mate, all right?' or some such similar flippant greeting

Yes, I agree that it is bloody annoying, but new staff appear in different jobs every day and cannot know everyone or everything immediately

I agree it might be a pain, but really, what is it that is so hard about showing a pass when asked?

The irony of this was that the barrier guys were new and were in their own smarts, albeit with ScotRail hi-vis. The Driver had his TOC's fleece and baseball cap on. Given the size of the particular operator he works for, he may well not have had a cubic pass.

Regardless, the barrier guy told him "NO-ONE is allowed on the platform"

They also seem to have a serious attitude problem - they were instructed to let no-one on Platform 12 for a steam special arriving. This meant they also refused access to the Driver of the ECS too

Why wasn't the driver able to prove his identity? By the same token, if a regular commuter forgot their ticket would you expect them to be let through the barriers because the staff recognised them? You have your pass or ticket for a reason, and it's your responsibility to present it when required.

I read on here ages ago of a dispute between barrier staff and a driver who wasn't allowed through to get to his train by them! I think it involved Manchester Piccadilly and G4S with its human barriers...
