What happens to ticket barriers in the event of a power cut? I ask this as Leeds Station suffered a power cut earlier this week and I was wondering how people would have got through them as surely unless there is some form or manual intervention they would have remained closed unless the barriers work of a separate power supply something which I doubt

They will have some kind of safety over-ride system I would have thought.

I think it's actually the other way round: the unpowered state of barriers is generally open, so that isthe state they will be in should a power cut occur.

Certainly the ones I work with are weighted to fall open if there's no power to them.

Does anybody know how it works? Some kind of electromagnet "locking" mechanism (and I use the word lock loosely because they are very easy to push open) which just lets them swing freely if power to the system is cut? Maybe with some kind of ballasting to stop them flapping around if they are unpowered?

Probably just a spring return.

There are a few safety features included in the automatic ticket barriers, included is a power failure contingency. Fitted in the barriers is a 12v battery which in case of power failure automatically opens the barriers to the open position.
