I saw a picture the other day of Barnsley station (the ex Exchange one) with only one platform, though I accept that at that time the Court House station was also in operation !
Does anyone know when the second platform was opened ?
Also when the current buildings (not the 2007 Interchange) were built ? It was before 1998 because I remember visiting then and seeing them.
Thanks

The second platform was added in April 1960 to facilitate the closure of Court House - the closure of the loco shed and associated trackwork in the January made available the necessary space. Here is a shot from April 1961 showing tidying up work still ongoing,

Thanks for that FP.
The picture I saw, of it only having one platform, was in "Past & Present : Yorkshire (part 2)" on page 77. The Engine shed was located where the second platform was subsequently built, i.e. the opposite side from the bus station. Ironically when the station was rebuilt (the other date I am trying to find) the station buildings (ticket office etc) were moved onto that platform. I'd have thought most passengers would have entered / exited the station from the bus station side (which is also the way into Barnsley town centre). So quite why they decided to put the ticket office on the East side I do not know ! Sadly they are talking of shutting the ticket office now....

I have a picture in RM (p182 / 1987) of Barnsley station building still in its original form. So the new buildings must have been built between 1987 and 1998

The current station buildings were constructed between 1991-1992

Old Barnsley station had a rather attractive station building by the looks of it.
