Barnsley bus breakers

This post set me thinking - Why are the majority of bus breakers concentrated in South Yorkshire and Barnsley in particular?

PVS, Ripley's, Wrigley's and Hardwick's all have dismantling yards in the same part of Barnsley. That's where the vast majority of end-of-life dismantling takes place

Because most of Barnsley is already half dismantled so they fit right in!

While I can't answer the question posed I can say it hasn't always been the case. Go back a few decades and Sherburn-in-Elmet was bus breaker central with seemingly acres of scrap vehicles visible from the train. North's was the scrap merchant based there.

North's weren't breakers for the sake of it - I'm not saying they never scrapped a vehicle, but for the most part anything they didn't want or couldn't sell they passed on to the established breakers.

Indeed, Barnsley was handy for Sheffield. To add, you probably wouldn't manage to establish a scrapyard just anywhere, the planning authorities were perhaps happy that the scrapyards were in their own little corner.

Because most of Barnsley is already half dismantled so they fit right in!

I appreciate that this post was likely made in jest, but it's very inaccurate. Plenty of former industrial towns in the north are really struggling but Barnsley seems to be weathering the storm rather better than most comparable places.

It's interesting to do a google maps search through that area. They don't update that area very often so you can see a lot of buses that were scrapped around 14 years ago (lots of Stagecoach Olympians and B10Ms)
