Barnham - Shanklin in July

Hi All,

I'm looking to spend a school INSET day with my eldest son, going walking on the Isle of Wight.

I live in East Grinstead, but plan to drive to Barnham and get the train to Portsmouth Harbour, then the ferry and onto the train to Shanklin.

A straight adult + child return for the 0822 ex Barnham comes in at £54.50.

I have noticed that if I split up the tickets and do Barnham>Portsmouth return (£17.55) and then use a Family Railcard to do Portsmouth>Shanklin return (£22.85) - I can realise a saving.

Am I missing anything here to get any better deal ? Will changing my starting station to, say, one on the Arun Valley Line make a difference for example ?

If you'd like to go by Hovercraft an Anytime Day return Barnham to Ryde Hoverport is £40.85 (1 Adult plus child) then £3.95 for returns from Ryde Esplanade to Shanklin with the railcard or all sorts of rover tickets on the IOW

You aren't missing anything. The Family & F Railcard is not valid during the morning peak, so if you can wait until 0859 then you can avail yourself of the discounted Off-Peak Day Return fare which shouldn't require you to split.

I assume that since it is an INSET day, it is a weekday.
