dont know much about the freight, but ALL Arriva Train Wales services between phweilli and birmingham international will be class 158.
No freight these days, as far as I know. There may be occasional engineering trains, otherwise it'll just be the 158's and the Cambrian steam train on its days of operation.
I hope you like Barmouth itself, I've always preferred Harlech! you should take a trip there if you can for the castle - very impressive!

I think you may have been misinformed.
Barmouth is not on the Cumbrian Coast, and does not see much in the way of freight.
If you expect to see Class 20s and 37s hauling nuclear trains, you will be disappointed!
Barmouth is on a completely different line, the Cambrian Coast line.

Yeah, the only stuff you get through Barmouth is the passenger stuff, the 158s Pwllheli-Shrewsbury/Birmingham, aren't there 150s sometimes? No freight etc AFAIK, but maybe an engineering train etc. No tours or anything I don't think, and yes it is THE CAMBRIAN COAST, the Cumbrian Coast gets loads of nuclear stuff etc for Sellafield

no 150's go up past shrewsbury.. not fitted with ertms...

A couple of things about Barmouth.
The same company that runs the trains (Arriva) have a semi express bus service following the old line to Ruabon, which makes Llangollen and its railway a good venue, these buses are almost brand new on this Barmouth/Wrexham route.
A once a week service on a Friday evening still runs from Machynlleth to Barmouth & return, originally run to get the local M.P home from Westminster,
Gwynedd County Council pay for this along with the Sunday services,3 in Summer and one in Winter.

Just to clarify - at the moment it is still RETB (Radio Electronic Token Block) and only class 158s and some 97 (ex class 37) locos are fitted with them. There are also portable units available for steam trains and other specials.
From Sutton Bridge Junction (just past Shrewsbury) onwards it is all single line with passing loops controlled by RETB. Th exception is Machynlleth which has semaphores, and a track circuited section between there and Dovey Junction where there are colour light signals.
ERTMS has been fitted on most of the 158 trains and the 3 class 97s as part resignalling of the line to ERTMS.
Apart from the steam train which is running over the summer holidays, you will mainly see the Arriva Class 158s (on the off chance you may see a yellow class 97 moving about - otherwise you might see them stabled at Colham Depot, on your right about 1km after leaving Shrewsbuy just before leaving the double track section to join the single Cambrian Line).
