OK - with buses running from Preston to the Lakes, and places like Edale likely to be swamped by 4-yr-olds and their 4x4 urban tractors, thought along these lines >
1. Buying a Greater Mancs all-day train ticket.

2. (Here's the important bit) using it to visit real-ale pubs as close to stations as possible, preferably where trains call at least once-an-hour.

So, ask the experts. You.

I know Stalyfridge has a real-ale bar on the station, it's often packed and you can't drink and watch the trains sail by. Lostock Arms is dead near Lostock but chavvy, and The Fox @ Strines is a walk up a muddy path (don't mind that) but the trains are irregular.

So, come on, load up the stations in Gtr Manc that have decent pubs in the nearness!!

drinking seems to be frowned upon by many on this board. ;)

I would have a look at Stalybridge, perhaps also head to Huddersfield and Dewsbury

Er...it's all within Greater Manchester to use the Day Ranger ;)

Couldn't give a Branson about having a beer being frowned upon - can't have one during the week due to my job, so I'm gonna let rip this weekend. And it's all tax to boost the economy. So there :D.

There's a nice pub in Mobberley and also one in Ashley, not sure how good the view is of the trains. They both are under the flight path out of Manchester Airport so nice view of the planes at least :p
(and I can't remember if Ashley is out of the GM Rail Ranger boundary but if so it's not much to get a ticket from the boundary to there)

Castleton - Blue Pits (John Willie Lees - acquired taste)

Mills Hill - Rose of Lancaster (also Lees)

Salford Central - Egerton Arms, Kings Arms or (for those with deep pockets) Mark Addy

Wigna - Anvil (excellent)

Rochdale - nothing near the station. Don't be tempted by The Baum (CAMRA National Pub of the Year) which is, imho, an overpriced Wetherspoons clone with tat on the walls and all the atmosphere of a small moonlet of Pluto...

Got the map of the GMDR boundaries in front of me, Mobberly and Ashley are both outside  as is Trackside (tram required from Central Manchester)
Any info on pubs around Middlewood, Heald Green, Hadfield/Glossop/Broadbum/Dinting, Mossley/Greenhill? These are on the edge of the boundary ans are unchartered waters; have done Glossop and Broadbum but a long time ago and pubs may well be shut now.
Glazebrook? Remember that from my college days, two centuries ago.

Castleton - good call. Lees is weewee but have they any decent bottles?
Salford Central - long time since I've been there. Is the Mark Addy by the river? Again, good call, might do that - lots of trains out!
Wigna *as seen printed on Bury FC's programme* Anvil - where exactly is it?
Oh, and about the Wigan area, any pubs still standing around Gathurst/Appley bridge?
This is getting promising!

Between Oxford Road and Deansgate the Britons Protection, Peveril of the Peak (if open), Lass O'Gowrie and the Knott Bar are all excellent.

You could walk from Salford Crescent to Salford Central taking in The Crescent, New Oxford, Kings Arms and Salford Arms (in that order they are about 5 mins apart and you're heading into town).

Doesn't the GMPTE day ranger include the Metrolink?

I think there's a few decent places at Mossley and Greenfield- maybe check the much maligned TransPennine RailAle trail website?

Yes, I know! Know them too well so want a change. It's the pubs towards Salford that I haven't been too in years so that may be the starting point. King's Arms being one (near Albert Square, right?) Getting some good ideas on here...keep 'em coming!

Considering a move to Memphis
You might like to head to Urmston where the former station building is now the Steamhouse pub ! I've not been in myself, but went past last week, and it looked good from the outside.

Also some good pubs in Atherton town centre, but that's a bit of a walk from the station.

Rose of Lancaster is very close to the station. Only been past it when travelling between our two work sites and a colleague is always allegedly passing there when I call to see when they'll be in the office...its become a bit synonymous :P

The Anvil is en route to Wigan bus station basically if you come out of Wallgate turn Left walk down King Street west get to a cr*p indie club called indiependance turn right walk about 100 metres and its the pub on your left approx 3 mins walk from Wallgate 4 from Northwestern Also Boulevard is a decent real ale pub in Wigan and atleast 4 ciders on at any one time although two are welsh :-\ also has £2 a pint of cask between 4-9 but thats midweek only and think they shut mondays now. also the Berkeley outside Wigan Wallgate is excellent Thatchers Vintage a award winning cider £2.50 a pint on cask with numerous decent real ales to.

Dont bother going Gathurst the nav got turned into a foreign food place (indian or sri lankan or summat?) and the station is just generic ales like wrongbow and carling

The Day Ranger (£4.60) and Evening Ranger (£2.30) cover the central zone of the Metrolink (Deansgate-Castlefield - Piccadilly - Victoria), the Daysaver TM (£7.50) and Daysaver TBM (£8.30) include the tram network.

I'd think twice about some establishments in Wigan, particularly The Clarence near Wallgate station. Lowlife drunken behaviour and punters with few manners and limited social skills is all I ever see walking past these places. Generally speaking, if you want a quiet, pleasant day I'd avoid Wigan.

How things have changed!! I was 18 or 19 before I owned my first car, and then it was only an old Morris Minor. ;)
