Ballast washed out between Middlesbrough & Redcar (05/09)

I recently arrived at Middlesbrough planning to change to the 15:29 to Saltburn. That and the 15:39 to Redcar Central, and the following three Saltburn services, were shown as cancelled. Staff at the station reported this was due to a burst water main having washed out the ballast between Middlesbrough and Redcar. (Now on the Arriva X4 bus instead).

Sorry to hear that man, I was planning to go out trainspotting at Shildon today but this burst water pipe is causing chaos between Darlington and Shildon parlaying all the services all the 156 trains are stuck on the wrong side of the tees valley line

Line re-opened in time for the 1650 from Middlesbrough to run through to Saltburn so you should be fine.

This suggests to me that the problem was less serious than ballast being washed away as related at the time - I presume that would take longer than 80 mins to repair and approve.

Probably Chinese whispers or similar I'd think! Someone somewhere probably said that they'd need to check if any ballast had been washed away and by the time that makes it to the frontline it's morphed into ballast has been washed away.
