Is that Svalbard near the top of the demonstation map, which shows dark green in the index. How was Svalbard doing so well in the time period of that definition timescale? The only mineral extraction is that of coal that is mined by Store Norske Spitzbergen Kulkompani, of which at least 30% is used within the land mass itself. The Norwegian authorities do not allow offshore drilling for oil and associated petroleum products for environmental reasons around Svalbard. It cannot be because of national ownership, as Greenland is coloured neutral grey on the map.
The reason why Svalbard is fresh in my mind is the sad story of the boy who was killed by a polar bear in the camp during a school visit there very recently.
