I dont get this about retail/service sector employees - surely a busy store = employment!

When i worked in the supermarket i used to love it busy - it meant the otherwise turgid day piling stuff on shelves went swiftly

I want to happy but regard the concept of summarising happiness into year long chunks bizarre. If I want to be happier why not start now rather than artificially enduring misery for longer than necessary?

New Year here in my little bit of Asia is in a little over 90 minutes away and I am really looking forward to it. I look at New Year as a chance to wipe the slate clean and start again with new and fresh opportunities to have a better and brighter year than that which has just passed. Reading some of the post thus far on this thread it looks like many people are looking forward to absolutely nothing at all this year and will be very happy if they have a dreadful year which is more dreadful than the year just gone by.

I have no problem with people celebrating whatever and however they like. But it is not obligatory and I don't care to join in. It seems some people are unable to accept that. The idea is to enjoy oneself but New Year's celebrations do not work for me.

[I was trying to remember the last time I celebrated New Year, and I think it must have been in the early or mid 70s.]

Christmas and New Year is for the kids and the deluded. The calender doesn't line up with the shortest or longest days of the year or any suspected birth or death dates of any religious figures. Just be grateful for every day you have, I celebrate every day I wake up just by looking at the world around me. All the very best to all of you anyway.

One thing I do take offence at is multinational corporations and the free market taking advantage of it. Easter eggs are on sale already.

Conversation I had with someone:

Person: What you doing for New Years?
Me: Nothing
Person: Don't you do anything New Year's?
Me: No, what's the point?
Person: Well It's a celebration of a new year..
Me: Yeah but we don't celebrate when it's a new day or month do we, you know, happy 24th October etc.
Person:........true....

I don't get it, it's just a new calender, and basically celebrating something that doesn't really exist, like time and days, it's just something to go by so we all know what year it is for reference.

Just think of it as a mid winter feast before the rigours of January and February as if you were a peasant before the times of the comforts of adequate amounts of food and heating. Seems as if all North European countries had some sort of yule fest but I agree it is all a bit OTT these days.

Quite so! Busy = profit yes, to an extent, this year like most years was more of busy = nothing on the shelves and nothing to restock it either. What you had you could fill, you were lucky to get on the floor in the first place.

Home shopping was a nightmare, everyone blowing out money at the last minute for cranberry sauce, turkey's, tins of chocolate, after eight's, all stuff we no longer sold on the day before Xmas Eve. Last year we had complaints that we ruined their Christmas and lives as they ordered on the last day beforehand, and weren't the only ones doing the same thing!

I never mentioned anything about them not spending their money. Of course I realise they pay my wages. How customers spend their hard earned money is entirely up to them. My comment was a mere observation.

I just don't celebrate the same way. My partner started work this morning at 0600 she is in one of the caring professions she is not allowed to consume alcohol. Therefore even if we wanted to consume alcohol work excludes us from doing so. Railway people should know that alcohol is a big no noin lots of jobs.

No rockets for me, but I was glad I went to Allenheads for the annual burning-tar-barrel-on-the-head-in-fancy-dress parade around the town last night.

After walking round the town they throw the flaming barrels onto a bonfire of christmas trees which then burns with a ferocious intensity for another hour.
It was, er, 'phenomenal'.

Ditto with the Train Manager onboard the Virgin service I caught, the gateline staff at Euston Underground, and the Southeastern conductor...thrice! Got a carriage all to myself on both NR journeys.

Are you trying to imply that wishing someone a happy new year and replying in kind is only valid if you have spent the last two weeks carousing rather than doing something else you might enjoy more?

Well thats it mate. I still wish everyone all the best but when people ask what I'm doing for New Year the answer is naff all. The only time I made an effort for New Year was 2 years back when I spent it in a surf hostel up the coast from Valparaiso in Chile. We had a beach BBQ and got tipsy and you could see the fireworks all along the coast which genuinely are really amazing.
