As a musician myself (and former double bass player) I always have sympathy for folk with musical instruments on public transport.

So do I, but on a busy Sunday afternoon, I much prefer to have a flute player than a double-bass player turn up to travel

Or, another way of looking it, I bet they were all popular with him for all choosing to travel at the same time and crowd out the train.

Surely a Double Bass is outwith the maximum dimensions for luggage on a train anyway? From Appendix B of the NRCoC:

2. Condition 47 allows you to take up to 3 items of luggage into the passenger accommodation of a train. One piece of luggage must be capable of being held in your lap if required, whilst the other pieces must each not exceed 30 x 70 x 90cm in size.

A double bass is about 2 metres tall!

As a Bass Clarinetist I do have some sympathy for those with larger instruments, but we should apply some common sense here - that's just not on!

There is that as well. I've used the same arguement with people trying to claim their bike was "luggage" because they had taken a wheel off because the bike spaces were full.

I always advise double bass players (of which a surprising number turn up!) to put it in the bike-shed on the HST. Some of the regulars have bunjie cords to strap it to the wire cage.

I always advise double bass players (of which a surprising number turn up!) to put it in the bike-shed on the HST. Some of the regulars have bunjie cords to strap it to the wire cage.

Really? Most DB players I know actually have the instruments at the concert hall, or being transported separately, or use basses that are at the hall. They generally just travel with the bow, which is much more portable.

I play the piano but I somehow doubt the average guard would let me on the train with a Steinway concert grand!
