Baglan To Cardiff Central

Looking for some help


Will be starting a new job in Cardiff will work from home two days a week and spend 3 in the office in Cardiff whats the cheepst way to do this

What time do you need to start work and when can you finish?
How many days of annual leave do you get?
Do you have/are eligible for any Railcards?

Making some assumptions in the meantime:

Monthly Season £207.00. Assuming 260 work days a year, that's £9.55/day. Valid anytime.
Annual Season: £2156.00. Assuming 260 work days a year, that's £8.29/day. Valid anytime.
TfW Multiflex: £6.98 per one-direction journey, so £13.96/day. Valid anytime.
Advances arriving at 0745 and leaving some time after 4pm/5pm/etc: £12.10/day. Specific booked service.
Advances arriving 0902 and leaving some time after 4pm/5pm/etc: £10.60/day. Specific booked service.

Without more information, on the face of it, season tickets are the way forward. The other advantage of season tickets is you can use them on your days off to head into town etc, or combine with other fares for 'split tickets' if you're going further afield.

Are there any origin/destination pairs which could squeeze out a little additional season ticket validity, for no additional cost, such as Briton Ferry to Cardiff Bay instead of Baglan to Cardiff Central?

Depending on how much holiday the OP gets and if it can be timed at least in round the renewal dates, it could be possible to only need 11 monthly seasons in a 12 month period - I managed this pretty easily the years I was commuting into Manchester

[EDIT] I forgot to also mention that you can get custom-length season tickets too, so if for example a monthly season ran out 5 weeks before a fortnight's holiday, you could get a season for that bespoke period rather than a one month plus a one week, which would be more expensive

I can't seem to find advances that cheap. (Often on TFW a pair of advances is the same sort of price or more expensive than an anytime return)

If advances are being considered for commuting on TFW, consider buying them via the JournyOn iPhone / Android app. It's a subscription service which gives 10% off all TFW advances for £1.90 a month, 15% for £3.90, and 35% off for £5.90.

I have no connection with the service, I'm just a very happy customer and I'm surprised it never seems to be mentioned here, and because of that I hope it's not going to turn out to be a failed business that disappears due to lack of users.

(Oh, it has a strange loyalty scheme itself too - you earn 1 point per mile on your journeys which equates to 1p, and you get next month's subscription free if you've got 190/390/590 points. I manage it surprisingly often because a cheap long distance advance bumps it up)

Swansea to Cardiff does not cost that much more

Note that Baglan has a less frequent service and that the trains stop at more places en-route and are more likely to be old sprinters with no air-con. If you can go to Port Talbot Parkway, you will have a greater choice of trains - but still try to avoid the stopping services and aim for the expresses.

If buying day return tickets from *Port Talbot Parkway to Cardiff, note that it is £12.30 return if using TFW trains both ways but £14.50 return if you also want to use the GWR trains one way or both ways. Suggest you do some test runs when you start work to see what suits you best. *Beware of parking fees.

Thank you all for the answers. Worked in Cardiff a while ago trains are every 2 hrs Baglan has free parking. GWR trains are a lot faster
