Bad News about 47826 :(

From the scene - it wasn't fully on fire, very minor apparently.

I was there, lots of smoke. I had the first window so got loads of pictures, and a face full of it! :razz:

I'll upload them shortly, as well as writting a short report, to clear things up for you.

Here's my little report:

Rumors suggested it was the brake blocks, but we think it as the traction motors which caught fire. We had to stop at the bottom of the summit, and 47854 pushed us to the top, and shunted us into the loop.
826 then really started smoking, with smoke coming from the doors and underneath. 4 fire engines, the police and two Network Rail vans appeared.
A block was put on the WCML until the source of the fire was found, and after 2 hr 30 mins 47854 took us back about 50m, then ran around the onsist on
the masinline, and onto the top of 826. It shunted 826 into a small siding on the left of the loop, then coupled to the train and took us towards Carlisle.

854 was low on fuel after doing Carnforth > Sheffield > Perth > Beatock on one tank, so was going to take us as far as it could. It got to Blackburn, and departed there, not sure how far it got after that, as I go off.

826 should still be in the small siding at Beatock loop unless something has been to rescue it. Unlikely though, as most WCRC locos are out on duties or un-operational. It may be up to 854 to rescue it, but it needs refueling, and what do they use for their Green Express tour to Sellafield tomorrow...?

Sellafield tour will be 47854 + 57601.

Shame its gone bang as it'll probably mean 57601 will be used more. Hopefully 47851 which is back in traffic will appear on more tours.

Is a shame, as 57601 is not decent haulage. Can't see why the WCRC 37s can't be used though...

851 went bang on Tuesday, as 854 went to rescue it...?

601 is a beast!

37s cannot be used as they have no OTMR. No exemption and no derogation applied for. Same goes for the 33s.

Yes, I knew that the 33s didn't have it, but wasn't sure on the 37s.

I suppose 601 is OK - never bashed it before, but have bashed a 57/3 which was good, if thats anything to go by...

I spoke with James Shuttleworth today as he visited our shed to pick up a hose pipe and he said that it's not too serious with 47826, only being a traction motor blower fault causing the blower and traction motor(s) to burn out. It should be back in sevice soon enough.

How can you comment when you've never had it? Hmmm...

601 is better than the GW and Virgin lot. Better than a rancid old duff too! Not as good as a certain heavy freight loco that is related to HSTs though...

WCRC rate 601 very highly indeed!

37248 was in the process of being OTMR'd last week I understand. The 33s/37s have the disadvantages of slower maximum speed and lack of train heat

I can't really comment, but I am not a fan of the 57s really, as they are too modern for my liking - for bashing purposes anyway! (will gladly phot one though

) I'd much rather a duff than a 57, but then again, I'd much rather a 37 than both of them!
