Having seen a 45 hauled railtour on the Midland Mainline last weekend I checked my records and my last peak hauled service train was 37 years ago behind green 45106.

Friday 27th January 1989
45106 1P13 1750 St Pancras - Derby (from Leicester)

The following Friday 3rd February 1989 45106 failed on the southbound 1C15 0712 Derby to St Pancras service and later suffered fire damage. The return was worked by a 47.
97561 1P13 1750 St Pancras - Derby (from Leicester)

Did any 45's work service trains after 3rd February 1989?

Today I had 47216, although at the time as was unaware that it would become notorious and require renumbering to 47299. It performed okay for me making a very tight connection onto the Harwich Boat Train. Unfortunately today it was another Class 47, albeit required, rather than the preferred class 37.

45042 York-Sheffield (0700 Newcastle-Poole)
31252 Sheffield-Wakefield W (0730 Worcester SH-Leeds)
47425 Wakefield W-Leeds (0904 Kings Cross-Leeds)
45129 Leeds-Sheffield (0935 Carlisle-Nottingham)
47488 Sheffield-York (1150 Birmingham NS-Newcastle) Relief
47216 York-Sheffield (1335 Newcastle-Swansea)
47170 Sheffield-Chesterfield (1515 Manchester Pic-Harwich PQ)
45042 Chesterfield-Sheffield (1139 Poole-Leeds)
45148 Sheffield-Chesterfield (1803 Sheffield-St Pancras)
46038 Chesterfield-Sheffield (1021 Penzance-Bradford Exchange)

Sunday 9th December 1979

Both the ECML & WCML were closed overnight for planned engineering work
Have just picked up on this thread, as the date, Saturday 9th December 1978, is of interest, and wonder if anyone can remember/has any records for the following;

On this Saturday I was aboard 1S16, 08.00 Kings Cross to Edinburgh with Deltic 2 from the Cross. All was well until excessive coasting was felt some miles South of Peterborough, where we were diverted over to the East side of the station and No 2 was shut down, and removed from the train. Turned out to be an ETH fault, and 47429 took us forward at 09.20 (about half hour late).

My notes, being mostly lists of numbers at specific locations, indicates the train in this guise swung left at Donny, and went via Wakefield, Leeds, Church Fenton and York, where it would seem 46030 replaced 47429. This is assuming I/we stayed with 1S16, and didn't decamp somewhere along the route? One clue here perhaps, is that at York, an old SR SUB, 4308 (ex 1293) was noted - was this stored in view of passing trains (as opposed to hidden away inside the shed) at this date?, prior to being restored in full?

It appears that at Newcastle we did the anti clockwise route via Gateshead depot and the High Level Bridge, ready to head West (towards Carlisle) after leaving Newcastle, suggesting 46030 was still at the helm.

All this suggests that the engineering works mentioned by Sultan1056 above (ECML at least), in addition to being diverted away from Selby, were still in place during the daytime (Saturday), so just wonder if anyone can shed any more light on this?

Thanks.

Edited: underlined text added for clarity. Have also checked other sources viz: Napier Chronicles, Railgenarchive, RCTS online Railway Observer.

You certainly wouldn't have had any heating or air conditioning on the sections hauled by 46 030!

Don't think that would have bothered us back then. I say us, there were at least two, the a-another having only just asked me to help locate details of said day in question!

The diversions I referred to were from 9th December 1979.
Unfortunately I am unable to help you with your query.

Three thoughts on this.

The introduction of HSTs on the ECML occurred on a bit by bit basis during 1978/79 so trains expected to be loco hauled may have turned up with HSTs.

46030 into Scotland most likely train is 1S27 Plymouth-Edinburgh.

Diversion via Carlisle would have been for the Penmanshiel Tunnel project where the tunnel collapsed in March 1979.

Today I travelled to London with a friend for a beer festival, IIRC it was at Olympia. We returned to Kings Cross in time to catch the 1736 to Peterborough. We were expecting it to be 89001. However it turned out to be 91001 being the first time a Class 91 worked a passenger service.

My first experience of electric traction out of Leeds. IIRC 89001 hauled a rather scruffy set of Mk11b and c stock. The train was shunt released at Kings Cross before its return to Leeds..

My first loco-hauled move on the big railway for quite a while, and red-pen action too, courtesy of a work trip to Cardiff.

67008 Manchester Piccadilly to Cardiff Central 1V46

Here's the Skip at it's destination:

Fingers crossed for similar success on the way back on Thursday.

Excellent! Which train are you hoping to return with on Thursday? If it's the 16 53 - and you're able to pay the first class supplement (£21?), there's a good chance that you'll be able to have an excellent freshly-cooked dinner on the way back to Manchester.

We're on the 10:53, so will still be digesting the hotel breakfast during the journey.

More red-penning today:

67025 Cardiff Central - Manchester Piccadilly 1W57

Here it is after arriving into Cardiff from Holyhead, prior to forming W57:

This thread seems to have gone into hibernation. We need some new blood to dust off those old moves books from the 1980s - or earlier!

Unfortunately I've used all the dates in my surviving notebooks....unless you would like us to repeat on an annual basis. If ever I come across any further books, I'll be sure to post the details on here

I've still got a load of days that I missed previously that I could fill in, though they may not be the most interesting! Looking at it, June is quite bare, so we'll see what we can dig up.

Meanwhile, I can find literally nothing for the 30th May for any year!

I drew a line at the year 2000, as "Back in the Day" seemed to me to be prior to that date. Having said that, there's a few interesting moves which took place after that date which - with the passage of time - might still be of interest. I will see what I can root out.

Thanks everyone. All contributions most welcome.

I sometimes take a very broad view, and post stuff from the previous day when I've been for a bash.

I have nothing for 30th May either, apart from one entry in 1979. We were on holiday in Lincolnshire and I did Market Rasen to Cleethorpes purely for the route. It was my only visit to Cleethorpes, and I don’t think I left the station.

I've only been to Cleethorpes once, for yellow-penning purposes. Units in and out.

It was one of those days where the weather is glorious inland but the sea fret makes it cold and wet at the coast. At least I managed a pint in the "Number 2 Refreshment Room". (Of was it Number 1?)

Nothing recorded for 26th April in any of the moves books I've got, so I'll rewind a few days to 21st April 1979 when I appeared to go on The Woldsman LCGB Tour with the following... I was still only into spotting then, but from my class listings (and confirmation of route from the Six Bells Junction website) , I know I did this railtour. I probably joined it in Manchester. As a North West spotter, passing Tinsley and Immingham (possibly Toton?) would have got me a lot of "cops". Bit more interesting haulage than the Cans...

LocosRoute

My only trip to Cleethorpes.

If you want to have a laugh, go back to post #820 for tales of class 40s, nuns, and Popery (but no pot-pourri).

Pope Day at York, when I missed the 40 on the Poole - Newcastle, and ended up behind a Goyle...

Which was also Pope day at Manchester, when there were literally a shed load of 40s out on Manchester-Blackpools (according to RailGen, there were 15). I only needed two of them, and still managed to miss one.
