'Ashford' passed my college in the morning and was required. No lectures in the afternoon so it was time for a trip on 1V66 rather than to the library!

33052 1V66 1310 Portsmouth H - Bristol TM (to Fareham)
33207 1O40 0950 Swansea - Portsmouth H (from Fareham)
33011 1V77 1510 Portsmouth H - Bristol TM (to Cosham)
33021 1O41 1206 Cardiff Cen - Portsmouth H (from Cosham to Portsmouth & Southsea)

Ashford was my 84th Crompton during my time at Portsmouth Poly. I would not get anymore required 33's. Withdrawals had started, sprinters were coming and studies were more important.

That's an impressive total - do you require any of those that are preserved?

I'm currently on a rather dismal 26, and there are a few knocking about that I require. To be fair, Tyneside was never a hotspot for Cromptons!

Unfortunately non of the preserved 33's are required but its a long time since I have had a trip behind 'Eastleigh' or 'Ashford'.

Its not a bad total but I'm sure some will have cleared the class if they were lucky enough to have had 6502 and 6576. I was never a serious basher and was just lucky to have had 84 over 3 years mostly by chance.

I was not desperate enough to do Southsea to Harbour moves.

The posts on here by 37 and 47 bashers are in a different league.

Once only for me! See post 3,106 up thread...

There were a few equivalent leaps in different parts of the country:

Newcastle - Manors (guilty!)
Man Pic - Oxford Road
Exeter Central - St Davids
Waverley - Haymarket (guilty!)
Cardiff Central - Queen St (guilty!)

Any others? Crompton commuter moves out of London?

I wouldn't include New St - International as that is slightly too far.

I did Newcastle to Manors once, to have a 37 on the stopper. I also did Newcastle to Heworth once to scratch 47232, before legging it back on a Metro for 47228 on 1M19!

Exeter Central-St Davids - guilty, when a was a youngster on a rover on our annual holidays to Devon. I haven't got a mileage book for 33s, just which ones I had, but I've got this horrible feeling quite a few might be 0.77 miles! I had 53 33s plus two (33035 and 33202) in preservation, although looking at the list of preserved ones there's another five I need (002/048/053/063/201), so I could theoretically get to 60.

Waverley-Haymarket - like pretty much every other basher, significantly guilty. I do have a mileage book for 40s, and 40065 is on 1.24 and 40161 on 2.48. I suspect a significant number of other locos, notably Classes 20/25/26/27 are on 1.24 as well!

Also, lots of Waverley - Haymarket moves, but they were underlined in a different colour!

Sadly 26005 remains underlined in that colour, but none of my 47s

I only did short leaps between Waverley and Haymarket and Exeter Saint Davids to Central from that list. The latter got me my only Hymek haulage in revenue service. I can add Attenborough to Beeston on Summer Saturdays to the list. 1mile 26 chains of raucous class 25 haulage.

As for Cromptons I managed a mere 94 of them (along with the two pre Tops withdrawals I missed out on 33036 and 33041) for haulage (shov-age). Many of the 33s were red penned for the 61 chains between Exeter Saint Davids and Central in my early teenage years. Once I moved to the London area for work I did find myself on occasions loitering on the SR Central division looking for the HG Cromptons especially the elusive slims; East Croydon to Sanderstead (1 mile 71 chains) and East Croydon to Norwood Junction (1mile 54 chains) . I then ended up commuting on the SW Division for a number of years racking up the mileages on the Eastleigh allocations (with the odd HG interloper thrown in). A number of my moves for class 33 haulage have already featured in this thread but I've not yet mentioned

Wednesday 28 November 1979
33045 HG 2U19 1720 London Bridge - East Grinstead (London Bridge to East Croydon)
33210 HG 2U25 1821 London Bridge - East Grinstead (East Croydon to Sanderstead)

Neither were required for haulage. I managed six haulages for a total of 185 miles 40 chains off 33045 including to and from the old station at Uckfield (closed in 1991) on one of the SR commuter trains. I had 33210 three times for a paltry total of 65 miles 4 chains (of which a journey from Salisbury to Bristol provided the majority of the the miles).

I am also guilty of some of those listed above. In addition I also had 33038 between East & South Croydon (post #5838). Slightly further than Exeter Central to St Davids. It was the only time I had it for haulage.

Exeter Central-St Davids - guilty
Worth it for the thrash too. I had all the 50s but had to stand and watch the only pair I saw on a Waterloo at St. Davids because another one was going to Barnstaple.

A more desperate leap:

6-7-85: 37021 Newcastle Platform 10 to the Hole & back 1F92

Removing a defective coach. "The Hole" being the sidings behind former P10 (now P4). Now taken up by P5-8

Fortunately I had it from Darlington to Newcastle later in the day on 1S51.

Had frequent short leaps between Beeston - Nottingham, with pairs of 20s on the Derby/Leicester -Skegness workings.

On 70s/80s summer Saturdays there was a desperate end of day leap to Albrighton to get the last pair of rats back to Wolverhampton. Sod’s law often meant that the one you wanted was dead. Having seen photos of the pairs being split at Aber to run round, meaning they were re-multed off shed, I’m not surprised.

You can do Moor St - Snow Hill leaps on the 68s. What it lacks in mileage it makes up for in thrash.

I'd completely forgotten that I did exactly that, a couple of years ago. I was getting the train to The Hawthorns for a work Xmas do, and 68015 turned up first, so my mileage on that is 0.7 as well!

Nine years ago today, I caught a (presumably) Cross Country train from Stockport to Birmingham International and return.

I used to consider haulage valid as long as it was between two stations, so Edinburgh/Haymarket for example was perfectly OK. However that does not help with diesel shunter moves, both 'Back in the Day', eg at Sheffield, or in preservation today. So, if it moves, it counts and goes in the book!

I've heard "a complete revolution of the wheels" to be the threshold for counting a loco for haulage. So bumping the stock prior to being uncoupled would not count.

My lowest count is approximately 1 coach length along the platform at York before the follies of attempting to haul a heavy ECML express using brake pipes and ETH cables only became apparent. I assume that York station must be on a falling gradient northbound or even that wouldn’t have been possible.
I now realise that that would effectively rule it out as haulage! As it was a eth Duff I’ve probably had it since, which doesn’t apply to the other three locos required to get that train to Edinburgh!
