Dreadful! I remember hearing about a rat working through to Newcastle on a service from Liverpool, but to get a pair down this stretch of the ECML sounds like a mega rarity.

During this period Class 25s were quite rare to be found working passenger services north of York, however I did experience another pair in the up direction during September 79.

Saturday 18th July 1981

I must have known that Deltic 9 was working the 1112 KX-Scarborough because after having Eastfield’s 37157 on the Newcastle-Yarmouth I wouldn’t have taken 47415 blind to Grantham. This service was routed to Scarborough via Goole, then on towards Hull, before taking the Anlaby curve, then on through Beverley, Bridlington and on to its final destination.

By early afternoon I was at Leeds having picked up only one required class 40. I decided to head back to York in the hope of getting the required 40046 on a Scarborough-Glasgow relief train. On my arrival at York 40046 was preparing to run round its train, the only problem was that the train was standing in the middle road. It’s only booked station stop before Edinburgh was Newcastle. Fortunately for me 55017 was waiting to re-engine the late running 0725 Plymouth-Edinburgh service so a plan was quickly hatched to take No17 to Newcastle and 40046 forward to Edinburgh. The next issue was which train would be ready to leave first because both 40046 and 55017 were now waiting to leave for the north. Deltic 17 got the road first and off we headed towards our next stop, Darlington. Depending on how each loco performed there was a chance that 40046 could pass me at Darlington. Deltic 17 performed well on its run to Darlington however it was an anxious wait at the station as passengers got off and on the train. 40046 didn’t get the chance to pass the Deltic here and so I arrived into Newcastle knowing my plan was working. A few minutes after Deltic 17 had left 40046 arrived and so I headed off towards Edinburgh. At Belford just south of Berwick the train came to stand and then after a short period it slowly passed Deltic 17 and it’s train which had been declared a failure after an engine room fire. My plan could have so easily gone wrong had Deltic 17 failed earlier on its journey.

This was the first day of my 1981 14 day All Line Rover and as it was to be the last year of Deltic operation I decided to focus my time with Deltics. I took No.8 to Grantham with the intention of returning to York on the 1605 from KX. My ALR was off to a dodgy start; Finsbury Park had obviously run out of available Deltics which was quite unusual for a Sunday during this period. I headed south and filled my time with a couple of 31s from Peterborough and March before heading into London for the northbound overnight services.

I can’t remember why I ended up with a 31 to Doncaster on the 0110 KX-Leeds, according to Napier Chronicles the 2355 KX-Edinburgh and 0002 KX-Newcastle were both Deltics heading out of KX that night. My intention was to head into Scotland so I joined Deltic 8 at Peterborough and travelled with it all the way to Aberdeen. I still regret not covering this service from KX because it was my best chance of travelling KX to Aberdeen throughout with a Deltic.

Day one of my 1979 ALR was a partial success having a couple of required 40s in North Wales. With no other 40s about I headed off to Derby with a 25 before going onto Cheltenham to pick up the overnight Bristol-Glasgow. This heavily loaded train was booked to be banked up the Lickey by a pair of 37s.

The second overnight of my 1979 ALR and having had an uncomfortable night being pulled and pushed around Chester I headed to Bristol for some sleep. At Bristol I took the first train out to Pompey with 31421. I decided that a change of scenery was needed so I headed up to London and onto Edinburgh via the WCML.

I was unaware at the time but the Deltic availability this week and in particular this day was quite poor with only 8 in normal traffic, one was restricted to vacuum only, 3 were on exams and 5 were on repairs. After taking No.13 to Newcastle I headed south to pick up 0550 KX-Aberdeen but 47414 dropped onto it so I stopped off at York and went home briefly before heading south with No. 13 again.

@Sultan1056 I notice you mention on two occasions in July 1981 the existence of an 0930 Durham - Kings Cross. Although I am strictly from the Beazer Homes League of bashers, I can't remember Durham ever having services that started there for Kings Cross. Were they summer additionals or something?

The train was the 1047 York-KX starting back from Durham and worked on several days of the week during the summer. The stock would have come ECS from Heaton missing Newcastle therefore allowing Durham passengers first dibs at a seat.

Another night doing the dreaded 'Down for the Up' leap on the Sleepers, then straight into work. The 'Night Riviera' was not scheduled to call at Bristol but it was booked a crew change and often the guard would release the doors. If they didn't, you would have to bail through the guard's door.

Having endured a Duff on the overnight from Edinburgh it was good to get onto the Achnasheen bash with guaranteed 26 action. Heading back to Perth I had to quickly retrace my steps between Pitlochry and Dalwhinnie when a pair of 26s were turned out on a Glasgow-Inverness service.

I'm afraid the photo hasn't been attached again! However, given the description, I suspect that it may have been a diverted Waterloo-Salisbury or Exeter service running via Soutrhampton due to engineering works. Was it a Sunday?

Ah - thanks - a diverted WoE hadn't crossed my mind.

The photo was a 110 format - the print (and negative) have been lost many years.
I suspect it was a Saturday or Sunday. We lived near Milton Keynes, so visiting would have occurred on a non working day.
My early-teen self had been taken there by parents, to stop me moaning about the 4 hour drive to see family friends! I do recall the photo had withdrawn 4-SUB units lined up adjacent to the station.

BR Farewell Class 44 Railtour

This BR arranged railtour was a bit premature, as the last 44s were not withdrawn until the end of 1980. Maybe it was the last occasion they were used on a railtour.

It was a freezing cold morning when we left Nottingham for Chester behind no heat 44009. The 12 coach train had been pre-heated by the loco on the empty stock move, but things soon changed. After departure nearly every window on the train seemed to be open, with heads out and cold air flowing in.

The route taken from Nottingham to Crewe was (via Chesterfield-Darnall-Tinsley-Wath-Barnsley-Dodworth-Pennistone-Woodhead-Guide Bridge-Stockport)

44009 came off at Crewe to be replaced by 44008+24133. The 24/1 was added for train heat but I can’t remember how effective it was. It must have been one of the few surviving Class 24s still running with a working boiler.

There was over an hour to kill at Chester, so we left the station for some refreshments. When we returned 24133 had been detached, and no heat 44008 took us back to Nottingham.

I came out to cover the 1215 York-KX but to my pleasure Deltic 14 arrived hauling a full and standing 1030 Newcastle-KX (booked for an HST). York passengers were advised not to board the train until an extra coach was attached to the rear, something that isn’t easy to do today. After having a non stop run between Doncaster and KX I headed over to London Bridge to cover the class 33s on the East Grinstead commuter services.
During this timetable in addition to the five class 33s in action there were also two LB-Brighton services booked for 73s, the only problem was that it wasn’t possible to cover all seven services. Today I took two 33s and two 73s before going onto Waterloo and increase my tally to three each. Back to KX for a Deltic overnight to Scotland.

Having travelled overnight on the 2225 Edinburgh-KX I left the train at Peterborough and caught the early morning service across to Cambridge. I went in the hope of picking up a non-boilered 37 into Liverpool Street. I was rewarded with 37060 on the first service into the capital. I then resumed my chase for more Deltics.

I was hoping that Deltic 22 would stick to its diagram by working the 0100 KX-Newcastle sleeper service. Unfortunately it was held back for a daytime relief to Edinburgh so I went over to Waterloo to fill in some time. I travelled down to Bournemouth where I was greeted by the sight of an ex-works 73003 waiting to take over the Channel Islands Boat Train. If the train kept to time I would be able to get over to Kings Cross for the 0940 to Edinburgh. I can’t remember why the train was late, maybe it was the 80mph speed restriction of the 73, but I got to Kings Cross to see the back of the 0940 to Edinburgh disappearing into Gas Works Tunnel. Having set my mind on going to Edinburgh I decided to head down the WCML. This was quite fortunate because I unexpectedly picked up a required 40 between Carstairs and Edinburgh.

I was heading up to London so at Carlisle I exchanged 85011 for 85022 and settled into an empty compartment where I quickly crashed out asleep. I woke a few hours later realising that I was now travelling in the opposite direction. I opened the blind to reveal brilliant sunshine and I quickly noticed the lack of overhead electrification masts. Where was I and what was hauling the train? I soon worked out that I was on the Midland Mainline somewhere north of Leicester and was now being hauled by an unidentified Duff. The train continued down the MML before branching off at Brent Junction. When it reached Acton Wells Junction the Duff was detached and a 25 was attached to the rear of the train before it hauled the very late running train into Euston. Apparently the WCML was closed south of Crewe because of a derailment.

I was lucky enough to see all 46 Class 92 in service before they started to store them or send them abroad, My last one to see was 92028 at Ashford International on 6th April 2010. I made a special journey to Ashford as I had information of its movement at the time. Class 92 were rare in Liverpool but did make occasional forays to Speke Yard on test. One such loco was 92041 which I saw there on 30th November 2011. My only previous sighting of this loco had been at a Tinsley Depot Open Day.

ALR Day 7 out of 14 and another good day is keeping my red pen busy. The objective of the day was to reach Carlisle by the evening to cover the Fridays Only Blackpool-Stranraer. This was achieved by getting my one and only 40 out of Glasgow Central. IIRC it wasn’t too long after this that 40s were prohibited from Central. The Stranraer duly produced with 40069 hauling a virtually empty train barring the front coach full of bashers.

Day 10 of my 1981 ALR and tiredness is definitely kicking in, travelling with Deltic 10 on the Edinburgh-Plymouth. I remember passing through Morpeth when I drifted off to sleep. The next thing I was aware of was travelling across King Edward Bridge, just south of Newcastle, not with a Deltic but with a Duff. I bailed out at Darlington for something more suitable. I’m not sure why 55010 was removed because it was back in traffic the following day. I decided that a change was needed so I headed off to Paddington.

I returned to Carlisle with 40069 getting very little sleep. My plan was to cover the Glasgow-Scarborough service and because it was Glasgow Fair Fortnight there would be relief services too. I took the first available train out of Carlisle to Kilmarnock just so I could get some rest. Somehow I managed to wake myself and get off there before returning back to Carlisle with 40083. Because of the Penmanshiel Tunnel collapse the Glasgow-Scarborough service was diverted via Carlisle and then Newcastle. It’s relief train worked by 40101, was however routed over the S&C to Leeds and York. I joined the train along with another six or seven bashers and headed south. The ideal move would be to take the train to York where the northbound reverse services could possibly be used. The only problem was that the relief service wasn’t booked to stop at York other than a crew change. At Leeds we decided to risk taking the train to York. To our disappointment it was routed through the middle road where it came to a stand. I don’t remember who it was but one of us decided to bail out and so like sheep most of us followed, quickly leaping up onto the platform. This had however not gone unnoticed and the Station Supervisor stormed up the platform to give us all an earful! Fortunately for me most of his anger was directed at just one person, TK a Train Guard. Our group quickly dispersed with only myself and TK sticking together. Wondering what would be the best move we wandered down to the south end of platform 9 (now 5) to watch 40047 bring in a Scarborough-Glasgow relief service. This too was routed in the middle road so obviously no use to us. As 40047 busied itself running around the train it’s guard who knew TK shouted across for a little chat. As the conversation progressed he asked if we wanted to join the train. Normally we wouldn’t have hesitated to take up this offer but we didn’t want a repeat of what had gone on only a short while earlier. We both looked back up to the central part of the station, all seemed fairly quiet with no visible sign of staff and in particular the Supervisor. We quickly dropped down onto the track and into the train; destination Edinburgh? Not quite, when the train arrived into Newcastle we were told that the train would be going to Berwick where passengers would be bussed to Edinburgh. This was no good to us so we left 40047 here. Apparently there had been a derailment somewhere on the WCML, the details of the actual problem were not known. Soon afterwards 40148 arrived with the scheduled Scarborough-Glasgow and to our pleasure we were told that it would be routed via Carlisle. Destination Edinburgh was back on!

Possibly. I once did a move from the up centre road onto the down centre road which at least had the advantage of being invisible from either platform.

I've never had to either. Though I've done just adjacent to Saltley depot, when some sadist in control replaced our nice no-heat 47 with a 45/1.
