Pfft! ...I'm still waiting for GBRF to get their act together on Leeds United. Mine is slightly more justified with GBRF 66's having worked with the Caledonian Sleeper Mk5's on the West Highland Line.

I do already have a Bachmann EWS 66 and it is one of the best models I own, so it will be interesting to see how the Accurascale 66 compares, with it originating from a slightly flawed predecessor.

I've not actually got an Accurascale loco yet, the 37 will be the first so I am still a little reluctant to go wild buying their loco's until I've got one in the flesh to evaluate.
I've got two of Accurascale's 31s on pre-order, but my layout (when I eventually build it) will be mostly DMUs... which don't seem to be in their wheelhouse. Only thing I've got from them is a couple of their HAA hopper packs.

It would be cool if GBRF manage to recreate all of the "Footballer" names on their Sheds.

Which liveries did you go for?

Accurascale do have an Irish DMU in the works, but I guess the list of remaining DMU’s that would be popular isn’t that long: 175, 185, 222 and the new CAF stuff? I do think an updated voyager would sell well though.

One in BR blue, and the "skinhead" in Railfreight grey.
I'd quite like to see one of the better quality manufacturers do a new version of the 110 and the Trans-Pennine 124s. The old Hornby Calder Valley model is very toy-like these days but still goes for silly money online. Then there's the Trix/Wrenn/Dapol 124 that's a bit off-scale. As you say, the 1980s DMUs are well covered these days with RealTrack doing a new 142 and updating their 156. Heljan could probably quite easily tweak their upcoming 104 into a 110. As they seem to like doing obscure classes such as the 07, 14 and 17 I wouldn't put it past them to do some more oddball classes like the 140 or 151!

New Post for the Autumn announcements on 2nd August:

Mostly new varieties of existing models this time. Video announcement here:

The Motorail car carriers in the EFE Rail range would look great on Fort George, @Iskra :)

EDIT: Ooh, refurbished CEPs too... Must. Not. Buy...

Glad they haven't one a 4CEP that I would be interested in (NSE or Connex), as it would've been a tough decision due to the cost of them (£589 RRP!)
Makes the price of the Hornby VEP seem incredibly good value.

That's...a lot.

I really do wish Hornby will make those VEPs again. Sadly it seems that NSE era stock is not of an interest to model manufacturers.

The price will probably come down not too long after release, as many recent models have. However, you risk missing out if you aren't prepared to pay that original price.

Having spent a lot of time looking at certain retailers bargain sections over the last few years, it has struck me that NSE Mk1, Mk2's and 159's have lingered somewhat, so can you blame them for not doing more NSE stuff? A classic livery for sure, but if modellers don't put their money where their mouth is, can you blame them for not doing more of that livery?

Don't tempt me, already got more stuff on pre-order and I'm running out of space!

The main thing I take from these most recent announcements is that Bachmann really are going head to head with Accurascale, with more 37's and more BR Mk1's suburbans, with versions in Blue for the first time as far as I'm aware. From a modellers perspective this is a bit sad as it's unnecessary duplication of resources that could be used to produce something different instead, rather than more of the same.

That's interesting, I didn't know they lingered around. I should be buying all the NSE stuff I can find, but I don't even have a layout right now! If they did do 4car NSE EMUs I would buy and hoard for when I do have a layout

If Bachmann are just doing the oddballs of the CEP fleet, can we have a 411/6

I still don't have anything up and running, but doesn't stop me buying models that represent what made the 12 inches to the foot hobby fun for me back in the day, but that in itself has caused me more recent problems (lack of space and £ wise !), as it can become addictive, and this is turn is due to the 'pre-order' or miss out mentality we find ourselves in. I don't blame the manufacturers for this, it is what it is in a supply and demand situation, so it's not easy if one has interests in numerous scenarios for which models are either available or will be soon!

411.608 or any one with the tapered windscreens?

No 1697, 1698 and 1699. They were fitted with the Mk6 motor bogie and I think the same trailer bogies as the VEP's.
They ran on the Central for a few years in the mid 90's mainly on the Brighton mainline.

All good things come to he who waits...

Video of Bachmann's winter 2023 announcements, including 4-CEPs in Blue/Grey, Jaffa Cake, and NSE colours.

Frustratingly, Bachmann have just announced a Class 30/31 model in OO despite Accurascale having had theirs in development for a good while.
Video from the Hornby Magazine YouTube channel here:

P.S. The example in the video shows a rather wobbly looking working fan (which like the 37 is only on the deluxe version). The coupling release system looks like a nice feature though.

This is both poor form now and poor business from Bachmann. They are clearly targeting the same models as Accurascale which is somewhat underhand and wasteful for the hobby as we could have those product slots producing something that we haven’t already got. Additionally, they are unlikely to be competitive on price or quality so Accurascale are likely to win this head to head, and like the 37’s they’ll end up being poor sellers and getting discounted in an increasingly weakening and saturated market. A total waste of time.

Very well said. The market needs to work together in all scales rather than compete on stuff like this.

Agreed. I've noticed lots of the "big" model rail YouTube channels doing videos about the future of the hobby following on from the Hattons closure and Warley cancellation. Whilst I feel that some of the alarmist rhetoric is an overreaction (and possibly a self-fulfilling prophecy), the two biggest manufacturers really don't help themselves, do they?

I was one of the few that paid over the odds for the Bachmann 37 rather than the Accurascale version, but only because their launch example happened to be my favourite. I've already got the Accurascale 31s on order so won't be paying Bachmann prices for this one!

Especially when they're both targeting the higher ends of the market. A Hornby Railroad or Railroad Plus Class XX can live quite comfortably in the same ecosystem as an Accurascale or Bachmann Class XX, but when you're both after the same slice of customer pie, it feels quite unsustainable - especially when Bachmann is inferior to Accurascale in most metrics. I'd much rather have brand-new models over trying to beat other manufacturers to mrket.

So now Hornby, Bachmann and Accurascale have all made the same class of loco. Waste of time. Will cost an arm and a leg no doubt and I won’t be buying it. An AC EMU would have been much more welcome.

Contrary to competition legislation. If the old annual anouncement regime was in place of annoucing a model before they had hardly done anythin b the 31 would probably have been announced in 2021 judging by the comments in the video. Accurascale announced theirs in Feb 2022.

That's also how I interpreted their reps' video comments. The model, apparently, has been in preparation and development for several years. If their R&D costs were already "sunk", then it would have been far more folly to abandon the model as a knee jerk to Accurascale's 2022 announcement.

I think Bachmann should divert their energy to developing a SR Bulleid-design EPB. This would fill a big gap in the market for Southern Region modellers. There were far more of them compared to the BR design
And a suite of tooling options enabling the Bulleid profile 4-SUB and Tin-HAL too.

And, in light of them having the tooling for the 117 DMU, I wonder what their required return on investment would be, for them to develop body tooling for the 115 and the 116

Can now see on YouTube that the Bachmann official channel has their full quarterly announcement video scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday 7th Feb) morning. Hopefully won't all be stuff that other manufacturers are also working on!
