A SWT class 450 would be nice or a class 444. I'm surprised that neither Hornby or Bachmann (AFAIK) have released either an Electrostar or a Capitalstar, given how widely across the South-East they are used

Expressed an interest in 2x450 from ModelRail which probably wont be produced now due to the price increases.
I would also buy any slammer models that look right and can pull themselves along (do you hear me Hornby) or any PEP or mk3 derived EMU as well.
So they dont sell at all.
PS yes I know this post is anecdotal so dont bother!

I can't see it costing Bachmann much more to produce a 450 as it can't need much work to make a copy of the mould used for the 350/1s and adjust it into a 450. The painting is probably done by a computer anyway

I've lost count of how many years ago the DCC Ready chassis for the 158 had been promised, must be more than five or six by now....

Before Bachmann starting selling EMUs, their opinion was.......

Unfortunately EMus dont sell....

Indeed they even stretched it to include electric locos...... Then they started making them. Bachmann's choice for a modern EMU was quite a strange one. They could have chosen the Electrostars (plenty about, many liveries, quite a wide area of use, some similarities to the 170s), They could have chosen the PEPs (all classes of similar design, many liveries, fair area of use) or they could have chosen the Mk3 based EMUs (Plenty of variations, liveries, etc, large area of use). But they chose a unit which had two liveries, two detail variations, one line of route and potential for just one other livery/route if made into a 450.

Do Modern EMUs sell? Why not ask Bratchell? they make a few kits, that are not motorised and often not even assembled (they started life as unpainted kits unless you had the wallet for a painted sample), for nearly double the price of Bachmann's sole EMU offering.

The first batch of real 350s were actually destined to be 450s, that's why they had third rail equipment fitted. The problem is not cost to make, but will they sell. If they got them made for £20 each and made 1,000 of them, they'd have to be sure of a return equalling £20,000, that'd be 200 at £100 a piece. Of course, they'll claim each £125 model cost £120 to make or something like that, because they have no interest in making EMUs.

I'd love Bachmann to do an S15 4-6-0 or a H16 4-6-2T but I won't hold my breath. We'll see a few retools (like the 158) and maybe see a few tarted up models (like the 'Dub Dee') return to the catalogue and perhaps one or two new locos.

Slightly miffed that they haven't announced their entire range and are going to stretch it out over the course of the next few months. Also a lot of the items mentions have been already announced. Still a 009 Baldwin 4-6-0T sounds brill and I am sure that the OO class 90 will be popular.

New announcements made as Bachmann celebrates 25 years in Europe

The annual new product announcements from Bachmann Branchline and Graham Farish were made today at an event to celebrate the company’s 25th Anniversary in 2014.

Bachmann’s Managing Director, Graham Hubbard said today “I cannot believe it is 25 years since my wife Ros and I walked into the then empty warehouse and started Bachmann here in the UK. Today we are a highly successful award winning brand with some 50 employees. I am also delighted that Mr Kenneth Ting, the Chairman of our parent company, Kader has travelled from Hong Kong to share our very special weekend with us. The last 25 years has been an epic journey for us and one that has ensured that Bachmann is a truly established international model railway company operating in America, Britain, China and Germany. The story is on going and I look forward to seeing the company go from strength to strength over the coming years”.


During the event Bachmann announced several new models that will be available over the coming 18 months. It also displayed the other ranges it distributes including EFE (Exclusive First Editions) model road vehicles and tube trains and the world famous W. Britain range of model soldiers.

In celebration of our 25th year of trading we have some incredible new announcements including that of our first venture into the world of narrow gauge, with a new OO9 range of locomotives, rolling stock and buildings.

Birdcage Coaches

The South East & Chatham Railway Birdcage 60ft coaches now being developed in OO scale will also appear in N scale. Three versions will be available comprising a Brake Composite, Composite and Brake 3rd. The Bluebell Railway in Sussex has all three types operating on its line.

The N scale vehicles will be produced in three car packs each carrying a prototypical set number, as rakes were permanently coupled together.

Liveries will include SE & CR Wellington brown, SR olive green and BR vermillion.

For now, Yes. Bachmann have said that there will be additional items announced and added to the range over the year but that's it for 2014. Next main announcement will be back in the usual March slot next year.
