Bache to Huddersfield - help please

Hi!

I am looking to travel from Bache to Huddersfield and back on Thursday 26 May, and could do with a bit of advice. I am aiming to be in Huddersfield for mid-to-late morning.

I gather the walk-up fare is around 27 quid, can it be done any cheaper? I can't buy in advance as I won't decide whether to travel or not until the day, but I don't mind leaving the train at Manchester Ox Road or Piccadilly to buy a new ticket if it saves a bit (and doesn't mess up my connections).

Also I will (if I travel) be meeting up with a friend who will be travelling from Lea Green, and we would like to meet up en-route if possible. Which are the best trains for us both to catch to meet up en route?

Any advice appreciated fellas (and ladies)

0740 Chester - Newton-Le-Willows (there is a 63 minute wait here)
0922 Newton-Le-Willows - Stalybridge (departs Victoria at 0957)

Bache to Manchester Stations SDR £14.50
Manchester Stations to Huddersfield CDR £10.90 (£10.60 rte Hebden Bridge arriving 5 minutes later via Brighouse rather than Stalybridge) valid after 09.30
Total £25.40 (£25.10 via Hebden Bridge)

In both cases you're friend can meet up with you at Newton-Le-Willows or Earlestown on either the 0911 or 1011 from Lea Green. You should be able to buy your first ticket from Bache or if not from a guard on the train, they should be able to issue the second ticket for you aswell.

I've not got access to ADVANTIX at present, but try splitting tickets at Frodsham for this journey, (Or Mouldsworth if travelling via the mid Cheshire line). Both tend to produce hefty discounts!

Very unlikely. Duos are normally restricted to services within the same timetable booklet, so you might be able to do Lea Green-Manchester Vic and Manchester Vic-Huddersfield.

I missed the date when I posted before, so here's my updated cheapest suggestion relating more specifically to your journey.

On the day at Bache buy an Altrincham day return for £10 (off peak) or £11.60 (anytime) depending on what time you leave.

Buy a Altrincham-Huddersfield off peak day return from SWT through Topcashback costing £12.60 when purchasing state you'll collect this ticket at Chester station and so so when you change trains on the day. You'll need your credit/debit card with you to collect the ticket. (Going through TopCashBack isn't imperative but it'll get you some money back on your purchase.)

On the day:
* Catch any train from Bache to Chester
* Catch the Northern service to Manchester which calls at Altrincham. It departs at 7 minutes past the hour from Chester. Do not leave Chester before 09:07 otherwise you'll have to pay a £2.10 excess on your Altrincham-Huddersfield ticket.
* Once at Picccadilly, Huddersfield trains are every 15 minutes. If the train from Chester arrives on time you'll be able to catch the Hull train, even though it departs less than 10 minutes after your scheduled arrival.

With my suggestion you'll change trains at Chester and Manchester so you'll have to meet your mate from Lea Green at Manchester and do the Manchester-Huddersfield journey together. If you want to meet earlier e.g. at Warrington or Newton-le-Willows you'll probably have to pay more.

Splitting at Frodsham seems to make sense, whilst keeping on the 'normal' routeing - ie Chester-Warrington-Piccadilly-Huddersfield. However, believe it or not I have never used split ticketing in my life - how does it work? Do I show the guard on the Arriva service both tickets (ie Bache-Frodsham, Frodsham-Huddersfield) when he comes round first time? Do I tell him/her what I'm doing? Will the guard care, or say something?

Yes, Bache-Frodsham is £6.40 Anytime Day Return; Frodsham-Huddersfield is £15.60 Off Peak Day Return (any train after 0930 from Frodsham). So total is £22.

As long as the train calls at the point you split at there is no problem. All trains on that route call at Frodsham.

Bache is unstaffed so you will only be able to buy the Bache-Frodsham ticket from the machine there. You should be able to buy the other ticket from the ticket window at Chester, but I have encountered some uninformed staff there. If you are succesful, it doesn't really matter if you show one or both on the Arriva train. The guard is unlkely to care one way or the other.

If they won't issue the ticket at Chester, then just buy it on the train to Manchester. If the guard comes round before Frodsham show them the first ticket to Frodsham and ask for the Frodsham-Huddersfield ticket.

If they don't come round until after Frodsham there is no real need to show them anything, just ask for the Huddersfield ticket - Frodsham is unstaffed and there are no ticket machines so they will be expecting to sell tickets from there. In the highly unlikely event that no one joins at Frodsham or there is a special ticket check there on the day, the guard may query your request. In that case just show the first ticket to confirm you have paid to Frodsham.
